Warhammer 40,000: space marine

Psychic Resistance

Titus has displayed a potent resistance to the psychic powers unleashed by the servants of Chaos on multiple occasions, the origin of which is unknown but which has laid suspicion upon him of somehow having been corrupted by the Ruinous Powers.

There is no sign of such a taint, nor has the captain been deemed to be a psyker, so the nature and scope of this resistance remains unknown at the present time, though this ability led to Titus’ arrest after the campaign on Graia by the Inquisition.

It is presumed he is currently undergoing a rigorous interrogation and tests of purity at Inquisitor Thrax’s hands.

The Quest Begins

Often outnumbered but never outgunned, Imperial Knights are miracles of the Dark Age technology. They can annihilate entire regiments of the foe in a single salvo, or else wield industrial-scale close-combat weaponry that can tear down a fortress gate or flip a battle tank with a single blow. There are numerous patterns of Knight, each of which lend themselves to broad strategic roles, such as scouting or fire support.

The ground shakes as the Imperial Knights march into battle, the pennants and honour banners affixed to their armour flapping in the hot winds of war. Massive plasma reactors thrum with energy, driving the pistons, servos, and gears that send the Knight suits pounding forward with frightening speed. At the heart of each towering war engine is a Noble pilot, sitting in their Throne Mechanicum and controlling their mighty steed.

Traitor Legions

Chaos Space Marine forces at war

Technically the Chaos Space Marine Legions are the only Space Marine Legions still in existence, the loyalist Legions having been reformed into self-contained Chapters after the Heresy. Though the Legion remains alive to the Chaos Marines as an identifying concept, in reality nearly all of the Chaos Legions have over time been scattered into separate war bands following rival Chaos Champions. It is said that only the Black Legion, Death Guard, and Word Bearers have retained their cohesion as a Legion. On occasion a highly favoured Champion of Chaos, such as Abaddon, is able to temporarily reunite these Traitor Legions against the Imperium.

The Great Devourer

They came from outside of our galaxy – a predator from some distant, forsaken place. Part of a unknowable vast gestalt consciousness known as the Hive Mind, the Tyranids are bio-adapted monstrosities who endlessly travel the stars in search of biomass, consuming entire planets in order to grow and adapt, falling upon worlds in waves until nothing remains but ash and acid-scarred rock. They cannot be bargained with. They cannot be stopped. They are the Tyranids, and they will not cease until they have devoured the universe.

Tyranids offer you a seemingly endless horde of single-minded beasts and hulking monsters armed with claws, talons and bio-weapons. Tyranid armies are incredibly distinctive, using alien creatures where other armies might have tanks and planes! A vast range of models means your choice of tactics is up to you – maybe you’ll take an elite force of armoured, towering brutes, or perhaps a devastating line of bio-artillery backed up by nightmarish alien psykers. After all, to adapt is to survive!

Vanguard Space Marine Units

  • Vanguard Infiltrators — Vanguard Infiltrators are battleline squad units responsible for disrupting enemy communications and sabotaging targets of opportunity. Their back-mounted Omni-Scramblers intercept signals across a broad spectrum, scrambling frequencies and shutting down enemy communications. When the time comes for the Infiltrators to fight directly, they emerge from their hiding places under cover of Smoke Grenades and cut down their foes with disciplined volleys from their marksman Bolt Carbines.
  • Vanguard Suppressors — Vanguard Suppressors are fire support units that specialise in rapid responses to heavily armoured enemy threats, entering battle either by dropping directly into the action via Grav-Chutes or in long, bounding leaps with the built-in Jump Packs of their Mark X Omnis Power Armour. As soon as a target is sighted, the Suppressors engage their shock-absorbing servo plates and let fly with their Accelerator Autocannons. The brutal ferocity of the foot-long, armour-piercing shells they unleash will blast apart anyone caught in their path and force even the most stoic enemies to seek shelter from the murderous firestorm.
  • Vanguard Eliminators — Dedicated marksmen, these fire support warriors haunt the shadows of the battlefield, seeking out high-value targets and bringing them down with pinpoint volleys. The optical sights of their Bolt Sniper Rifles can be tailored for any situation, from thermoscopic vision to precision auspex scans that can penetrate several metres through solid matter. Each member of a Vanguard Eliminator Squad carries spare magazines filled with special issue ammunition for every tactical eventuality and variety of target.
  • Vanguard Helix Adept — A Helix Adept is a medicae specialist who accompanies squads of Vanguard Marines. Due to the sheer length of time Vanguard Space Marines typically spend behind enemy lines, it was found effective for them to utilize a specialised corps of medical adepts permanently assigned to their formations. Known as Helix Adepts, these warriors are trained by the Chapter’s Apothecarion but are not fully-fledged Primaris Apothecaries.
  • Vanguard Lieutenant — Primaris Lieutenants of the Vanguard formations provide support and tactical flexibility for their Captain. Often, when a strike team is engaged in a complex, multi-faceted operation, a Lieutenant will be assigned to oversee one or more critical aspects. In addition to their leadership qualities, Lieutenants are skilled bladesmen and dead-eye shots with their Occulus Bolt Carbines.
  • Vanguard Captain — Some Primaris Space Marine Captains, including the 10th Company officer who serves as both the Master of Recruits and the Master of Reconnaissance in Codex Astartes-compliant Chapters, wear Mark X Phobos Armour and use Vanguard weapons such as the Instigator Bolt Carbine.
  • Vanguard Librarian — Librarians chosen for Vanguard service have mastered unique battle-disciplines that focus on obscuring the passage of their comrades and wrong-footing the opponent with illusions and hallucinations. Shaping psychic energy about themselves like a cloak of shadow, these psykers guide their Battle-Brothers through enemy territory to their destination without raising so much as a flicker of suspicion from watchful foes. They are cowled in hooded Cameleoline Cloaks to keep their identity — and the formidable psychic potential at their disposal — concealed from prying eyes.
  • Impulsor — The Impulsor is an anti-gravitic armoured personnel carrier often used by Vanguard Space Marine units.
  • Invictor Tactical Warsuit — The Invictor is a lightly armoured combat walker often found fighting alongside Vanguard Space Marines on reconnaissance missions. It is designed with sound-dampening materials, enabling the warsuit to move at great speed with minimal noise output in support of the pilot’s Vanguard brethren.

Origins

Ten thousand years ago, Horus, Warmaster of the Imperium and most trusted ‘son’ of the Emperor, fell to Chaos due to a conspiracy by the Word Bearers. Besides the Space Marine Legion under his direct command, the Sons of Horus, eight of his brother-Primarchs and their legions also joined him in the Horus Heresy against the Emperor.

Only when Horus was slain at the ultimate conflict of the Heresy, the Battle of Terra, was the rebellion broken and the defeated Traitor Legions hounded into the Eye of Terror, which remains both their prison and sanctuary to this day. The Chaos Space Marines have not forgotten their defeat in the Heresy, and for the last ten thousand years have waged the Long War against the Imperium.

History

Captain Titus faces the Ork invasion of the Forge World of Graia.

Over the course of his long service, Titus has overcome countless opponents and suffered many wounds, both physical and psychological. In his early days as an Astartes, he struggled to overcome his own temper.

Later, he survived the death of his entire squad at the hands of a Chaos Sorcerer; Titus killed this corrupted servant of the Ruinous Powers, but suffered grievous wounds in the course of the battle — and some in the Chapter have questioned how he survived, intimating that he himself may have been touched by the corruption of Chaos.

Titus became the Ultramarines 2nd Company’s commander when his former captain died in battle. He was by his mentor’s side when he fell, and still feels the weight of taking over his mantle of command.

Titus faced his greatest test when he and his company of Ultramarines were sent to the Adeptus Mechanicus Forge World of Graia in the Segmentum Tempestus to stop an invasion by an Ork WAAAGH! 1 million Greenskins strong led by the Warboss Grimskull. Grimskull was intent on stealing advanced Imperial weapons, including a Warlord-class Battle Titan.

The assault was part of an intricate plan unleashed by the Chaos Sorcerer Nemeroth, the Chaos Lord of a warband of Chaos Space Marines known as the Chosen of Nemeroth, to get his hands on an experimental power source on the world that would allow him to ascend to become a Daemon Prince. Accompanied by 2 members of his command squad, Sergeant Sidonus and Battle-Brother Leandros, Titus joined with the Imperial Guard’s 203rd Cadian Shock Troops Regiment and its only surviving officer, 2nd Lieutenant Mira, to eventually kill Grimskull and halt the WAAAGH!

Brothers Sidonus, Titus and Leandros.

Unfortunately, the Ordo Xenos Inquisitor Drogan, who Titus and his Astartes relied upon for assistance in retaking the world, was actually an undead pawn of Nemeroth who used a specially designed weapon powered by the experimental power source Nemeroth wanted, to open a portal into the Warp that allowed the Chaos Sorcerer, a horde of Chaos daemons and his Chaos Space Marines to come to Graia.

Curiously, however, Titus displayed an unknown immunity to the sorcerer’s psychic powers which immediately raised the suspicions of the highly orthodox Leandros to his commander’s possible corruption.

Following the death of his old friend Sidonus at Nemeroth’s hand, Titus hunted down the foul Chaos Sorcerer and slew him just as he was in the throes of the ascent to daemonhood, banishing his dark soul back to the Warp for punishment by his Dark Gods.

Unfortunately, after saving Graia, Captain Titus was taken into custody by the Inquisition’s Inquisitor Thrax and his retinue of Black Templars Space Marines on suspicion of heresy after Leandros reported his captain for both his resistance to Nemeroth’s sorcery and his multiple deviations from the Codex Astartes held sacrosanct by all Ultramarines. His current fate is unknown.

The Threat Within

Genestealers are the pioneers of Tyranid invasions, infecting human cultures and, over generations, turning them into mutant insurrectionists known as the Genestealer Cults. Blessed with alien cunning and strange “gifts”, these worshippers of the Tyranids bring entire worlds down from within, turning the implements they once used to build the Imperium to its ultimate ruin in carefully planned insurrections that see even the military might of the Astra Militarum humbled.

Genestealer Cult forces let you take command of an insurrection, combining a scrappy, rugged array of civilian vehicles and weapons with nifty alien tricks. Capable of pouncing on enemies from anywhere in hit-and-run attacks, Genestealer Cult armies boast versatile infantry and terrifying close-combat brutes. Rewarding to careful planners, Genestealer Cults allow you to punch way above your weight through sheer cunning, while for painters and collectors, the army offers a glimpse at the “ordinary” civilians of the 41st Millennium – give or take a few arms…

Story

The Forge World Graia has been conquered by an Ork Waaagh led by Warboss Grimskull. Sent to liberate the planet is the Ultramarines 2nd Company. Players assume the role as Captain Titus, commander of the 2nd Company. Titus, alongside two other Marines, Sergeant Sidonus and Leandros, link up with the 203rd Cadian Regiment and locates Inquisitor Drogan. Drogan, alongside the Marines enters the Manufactorum’s power reactor searching for a device capable of opening a psychic scourge that apparently could kill the Orks. After retrieving the device, the Marines and Drogan later successfully activated the device on the Spire, an orbital elevator.

Instead of killing the Orks, it opens a warp gate which allows Chaos forces to attack Graia. It is implied that Drogan was killed after sending his distress message; Drogan’s corpse is possessed by a daemon that serves the Chaos Lord Nemeroth. As Nemeroth’s forces enter the planet, Titus plans to destroy the gates by using a Warlord Battle Titan to destroy the Spire. The Titan destroys the Spire; both Grimskull and Sidonus is killed in the process and the device is stolen. Titus, aided by the Blood Ravens leads an attack against Nemeroth’s forces to reach the remnants of the Spire and stop Nemeroth from ascending to daemonhood. Titus defeats Nemeroth and destroys the device.

Graia is liberated, and the game ends with Titus arrested by Inquisitor Thrax on fear that he maybe corrupted by Chaos.

In terms of the larger Warhammer 40,000 universe it has been stated on the game’s official website’s forum that, «The game takes place on a parallel timeline within the fluff, but the characters are not the same.» However, the validity of that statement has been questioned.

Hammer of the Emperor

In a galaxy of terrors, those who would stand firm and fight for their species are champions all. In battle, the Imperial Guard bring immense firepower and sheer, crushing weight of numbers to bear. Astra Militarum armies are characterised by teeming regiments of ground-pounding infantry, mechanised assault spearheads, rumbling armoured columns, tortured battle psykers, companies of abhuman troopers, sprawling batteries of mobile artillery, sky-darkening squadrons of combat aircraft, and super-heavy war engines the size of mobile fortresses.

When the grand armies of the Astra Militarum open fire, it is apocalyptic. If you like the idea of filling the air with countless lasgun beams, salvoes of missiles, and the fury of plasma blasts, then the Imperial Guard is for you. Overwhelm your enemies by hurling regiments of Guardsmen into the meat grinder, or crush your foes beneath the tracks of dozens of tanks. It may seem like a horrific way to make war, but this impersonal slaughter has won untold victories in the name of the Emperor.

History

First deployed en masse during the Indomitus Crusade after the formation of the Great Rift, Vanguard strike forces proved fearsomely effective at their tasks of reconnaissance-in-force, infiltration and sabotage. As Primarch Roboute Guilliman’s forces pushed ever further into Chaos-infested space, the Vanguard Space Marines fought ahead of the advance, dismantling the foe’s ability to resist the Imperial war machine.

The Khornate warlord Ul Ghresk fell victim to a volley of precision bolt rounds at the Battle of Eight Pillars, sending his Fleshreavers into a self-destructive frenzy. The corrupted spaceports at Braxar Tertia were destroyed when a series of detonations broke apart their grav-locked moorings, causing the entire structure to smash down upon a Chaos mustering ground.

Upon the Heretic-held Forge World of Drianturn, the Chaos Titan Degradator was drowned in burning promethium when a series of sump dams mysteriously malfunctioned. Across contested space, countless similar acts of covert destruction were carried out with peerless skill.

Such was the disorder caused by these strikes that several internecine conflicts were ignited between rival Chaos factions who blamed one another for the baffling attacks that were crippling their forces. Terror and confusion, two of the greatest weapons of the Dark Gods’ followers, were now being employed against them, and the results were devastatingly effective.

As the Indomitus Crusade delved deeper into enemy territory and was struck by multiple Chaos counter-assaults, the Vanguard Space Marines seamlessly fell back to support their Battle-Brothers, launching flanking assaults and withering the foe’s forward units with unrelenting sniper fire.

Finally, the enemy came face-to-face with the hidden menace that had haunted them for so many solar months. Reiver Squads burst from the shadows, Vox-augmented masks howling blood-curdling battle cries as they fell upon the foe with Heavy Bolt Pistols and Combat Knives. Eliminators stalked the shadows, every shot from their silenced Bolt Sniper Rifles a kill.

Vanguard Space Marines proved no less devastating when fighting in concert with battle line troops than they had been while carrying out aggressive reconnaissance actions.

Indeed, so impressed was Guilliman with the performance of his Vanguard formations that he made a number of amendments to the Codex Astartes — his legendary thesis on warfare — in order to better accommodate them into the Space Marines’ overall tactical doctrine.

In the years since, Vanguard Space Marines have continued to perform a vital role in the defence of the Imperium. With violent Warp Storms covering almost half the known galaxy in a veil of darkness and fear, dedicated reconnaissance forces have proven vital for the Adeptus Astartes.

Vanguard strike forces delve into the deadliest reaches of space, clearing the path for crusades of reconquest and retribution, harrying the forces of the Dark Gods wherever they are found.

Chapter Variants

Those Space Marine Chapters regarded as Codex-compliant Chapters usually adhere strictly to the tenets set down by the Primarch Roboute Guilliman to the letter. There are, however, several noteworthy and substantial deviations from the Codex Astartes prescribed doctrine.

Most notable among these deviations are the use of certain honourific ranks and titles within the Chapter in place of the standard Space Marine Sergeant rank, which was also a common practise amongst the ancient Space Marine Legions during the Great Crusade and Horus Heresy eras of the late 30th and early 31st Millennia.

The following is a sample of some of the various honourifics and titles utilised by the Space Marines:

The Eye of Terror

Within the confines of the hellish zone of the Galaxy known as the Eye of Terror, the banished Chaos Space Marines, along with their exiled allies and slaves, have created their own Imperium of Chaos. In the most Chaos-saturated region of the galaxy, few in the ten thousand years of their exile have escaped mutation in some form.

Within the Eye, the legions fight among themselves for gene-seed, resources, slaves, or for the greater glory of the Chaos Gods. The legions however are far more driven by their hatred of the Imperium than by internecine rivalry. From the Eye, the forces of Chaos Marines emerge to exact their vengeance upon the Imperium, continuing the Long War they begun ten thousand years ago.

Chaos incursions range from the small scale but brutal raids which can occur anywhere in the galaxy, to the apocalyptic Black Crusades led by the Warmaster of Chaos, Abaddon the Despoiler, when the forces of Chaos in all its forms unite to batter the fortress worlds close to the Eye.

Weapons

Players will be able to access a range of different weapons. The player’s character has four weapon spots, one fixed and three interchangeable. The fixed slot holds a boltgun. Two weapon slots are completely interchangeable can carry a Stalker Pattern Bolter, melta gun, plasma gun, stormbolter, lascannon or vengeance launcher. In the final slot the player carries a pistol, which has infinite ammunition, and melee weapon. Part way through the bolt pistol can be swapped out permanently for the plasma pistol, while the melee weapon, which is initially a combat knife, can be swapped between chainsword, power axe and thunder hammer. Carrying the thunder hammer comes at a penalty with only the pistol and boltgun useable.

At specific points in the game the player can temporarily use heavier weapons, such as the heavy bolter, plasma cannon and autocannon. While carrying these heavy weapons the player cannot attack in melee and is only able to perform a knock back against opponents.

The player is also able to carry up to five frag grenades.

Dawn of Waaagh!

Orks are hulking creatures quite literally born to fight, a deadly alien race that loves nothing more than a good scrap. Led into battle by hulking Warbosses, Ork hordes known as Waaaghs! leave utter ruin in their wake, as roiling, seemingly endless hordes of Boyz cause merry havoc with scavenged weapons and wargear. To the Orks, might makes right – and few are as mighty as they.

Ork armies are as diverse, punchy, and bonkers as Orks themselves! From the nigh-legendary “green tide” of choppy Boyz, to rumbling armoured columns, to Dread Mobs of clanking walkers, Ork armies are generally characterised by devastating (and inaccurate) firepower and bruising melee skills. Orks are wildly unpredictable to both you and your foe, ensuring no two games are the same and offering all sorts of hilarious moments, while for painters and collectors, the range is a playground for vivid paint jobs and crazy conversions.
