The cultist

The Bullet’s Route[]

Forge

The Bullet’s Forge elevator is largely standard. A two leveled platform, with two smaller intermediary platforms to allow for easier ascension. Its one major deviation comes in the form of a large hole in the center of the lower level, posing a significant falling risk, and restricting the player’s movement options.

Notes

This elevator is functionally identical to the Hollow elevators of the Hunter and Robot paths.

Hollow

The Bullet’s Hollow elevator consists of five separate pillars, each sporting an extra raised platform atop them. These pillars are each adorned with a switch (possibly intended to be the hammer of a gun). At random, these switches will move to a downwards position, causing their respective pillars to lower. The switch will stay in this position for a short time before flicking back to an upwards position, causing the platform to return to a neutral state.

Notes

  • This elevator is highly similar (but not identical) to the Hollow elevator on the Convict path.
  • Thanks to the way the switches on the pillars work, it is very simple to predict when a pillar is going to raise back to a neutral state.
    • It is not as simple, however, to predict when the pillars will lower.
    • With certain bosses, instead of spawning a default boss elevator, the pillars will level out and cease moving, and the upper platforms will descend and be replaced by a metallic covering. This causes the elevator to assume a shape identical to that of the default boss elevator.
  • There is no way to fall in this elevator.

Black Powder Mine

The Bullet’s Mines elevator is horizontal rather than vertical, travelling at great speeds to the right on rails. The player is allowed to step down onto the tracks here without consequence, but if they linger long enough to go off screen they will take damage.

Notes

  • This elevator appears to be some sort of tank, possibly the remains of the Treadnaught.
  • The player also takes damage if they go off screen to the left, though this is significantly harder to do accidentally.
  • This elevator is functionally identical to the Mines elevator on the Bullet Route.
  • Occasionally a Tanker will poke its head out of the hatch on the right side of the elevator. This is purely aesthetic, and has no actual effect.

Gungeon Proper

The Bullet’s Gungeon Proper elevator is a small, free-moving rocket-powered elevator in a wider shaft. It consists of two main levels, a smaller intermissive platform for easy climbing, and two buttons on the left and right of the lower level. Pressing these buttons causes the elevator to move in their respective direction, either left or right.

Periodically the elevator will encounter wall-mounted scaffolding piled high with wooden crates marked with skulls. These scaffolds can either be on the left of the shaft, the right of the shaft, or suspended precariously in the middle of the shaft. Scaffolds in the center are typically much smaller, and contain much fewer crates.

If these crates make contact with the elevator they will burst, with each crate having a chance to release a ring of bullets upon doing so. The player is intended to maneuver the elevator to avoid these scaffolds and crates, to avoid complicating fighting the numerous enemies. Despite this, it is possible to complete the elevator without once touching the buttons.

Notes

  • This elevator bears some similarities to the Hollow elevator on the Pilot’s Path.
  • It is impossible to avoid scaffolding in the middle of the shaft, though due to its decreased crate capacity it is rarely very dangerous.

Keep of the Lead Lord

The elevator is the same on all routes. It is a small rocket-powered free-moving platform in a much larger shaft. It drifts around the shaft, bouncing off the walls.

It has two main levels, and one special intermediary platform. This platform is much longer than its static counterparts, and is pushed in whenever the elevator presses against the shaft walls.

Trivia[]

  • After the effect of the item occurs, it will be permanently renamed to «Hero Pig», with a new description and pick-up quote that remain even after the run is over.
    • Pick-up quote: «He was so young.»
    • Description: «A hero pig. You should have never doubted this pig. He is a true hero.»
  • This item may be a reference to the German movie «Siegfried», where a pig saves the protagonist’s life by jumping in front of an arrow.
  • This item may also be a reference to a viral video titled «Hero Pig Saves Baby Goat,» in which a pig appears out of nowhere to assist a drowning baby goat. This may be unlikely, however, due to the fact that there was no sacrifice and the video was staged.
  • This item may be a reference to the anime «Seven Deadly Sins», where the talking pig Hawk, the Captain of the Order of Scraps Disposal, has identical properties.
  • This item may also be a reference to the video game «Minecraft : Story Mode» by Telltale games wherein the protagonist Jesse’s pet pig sacrifices himself to save him and the rest of the cast during the final battle against the Mutant Wither.
  • The synergy is a reference to the final fight against Mother Brain in Super Metroid, in which after the baby Metroid is killed, Samus gains the Hyper Beam.
  • The synergy refers to the stuffed pig carried by Marvin Boggs (played by John Malkovich) in RED. Malkovich also played the assassin in In the Line of Fire which the Composite Gun is based on.
  • The synergy is a reference to the in-game boss Cannon, himself a reference to Ganon from the Legend of Zelda video game series. The synergy name refers to Cannon returning in some formvia the appearance of the pig. The synergy being named «The Return» may also be a reference to the game-over screen from Legend of Zelda 2: Adventure of Link, which includes the line «RETURN OF GANON».

Behavior[]

The Lich has three phases.

Phase 1:

  • Fires large rings of bullets outwards along with random scattered bullets.
  • Fires six rotating spirals of bullets that periodically change their direction of rotation.
  • Fires a ring of normal bullets and a ring of bouncing bullets.
  • Fires four spreads of five bullets.
  • Fires a single fast, homing bullet.
  • Spawns four Tombstoners.

After the first phase is defeated, a hand will pop out of the ground and drag the player down into the arena of the second phase.

Phase 2:

In this phase, the Lich stays stationary above the player. He has several different attacks:

  • Pounds the arena with one hand, sending out randomly scattered bullets and a wave of normal bullets off to one side. Many bullets then travel horizontally across the arena starting from that side. The smaller, flashing bullets will disappear halfway across the arena.
  • Opens his rib cage, sending rings of bullets towards the player. A few of the bullets in the rings will then travel towards the player.
  • Opens his rib cage, sending many waving lines of bullets towards the player.
  • Pounds the arena with both hands, sending rows of bullets across the arena from both sides.

Attempting to fly behind the Lich during this phase will cause a wall of bullets to fly down, covering the chasm and forcing the player back towards the bottom half of the arena.

After the second phase is defeated, the player will be sent to a new arena where the third phase will materialize.

Phase 3:

In this phase, the Lich floats towards the player, and has more different attacks:

  • Fires a rocket made out of bullets that flies out to the side, then flies towards the player, leaving many bullets in its wake.
  • Fires lines of bullets towards the edges of the arena, then makes them rotate at varying speeds.
  • Fires lines of bullets throughout the arena, with several links breaking off towards the player.
  • Creates bullets in a gun shape, then fires the bullets towards the player.
  • Fires a boomerang of bullets towards the player that curves back towards the Lich.
  • Travels up and down the center of the arena, rapidly firing lines of bullets to the sides.
  • Fills the arena with bullets except for a small cone, then rotates the cone while a wedge of bullets sweeps across the safe area.
  • Sprays bullets above and below himself while spraying waves of bullets to the sides.

After the third phase is defeated, the player must shoot the Gun That Can Kill The Past at the Lich to complete the run.

Story[]

Before the Cultist enters the Gungeon, their reason for being there is probably to make their sibling take the blame for spilling grape juice on the couch, as stated in the Ammonomicon entry for the Dart Gun. However, their motives change over the course of what happens in the Gungeon as they are treated poorly by the NPCs. Eventually, they come to the conclusion that what they want is to defeat player one and become the protagonist.

Past Kill

If The Gun That Can Kill The Past is used on The Cultist, they will be brought back to The Breach earlier that same day. The Cultist will tell the protagonist that they are sick of being referred to as «Number 2» and will then challenge them to a duel over who the game’s story will focus on. Two pedestals each carrying a Magnum will have spawned, one behind the protagonist and one behind The Cultist. The two players are then allowed to move around The Breach, pick up a Magnum and fight each other to the death. Each player has 3 hearts and 2 blanks. The Breach is completely devoid of any of the usual NPCs at this time and all doorways, including the entrance to the Gungeon, are blocked off. A few tables are also scattered around, as to provide cover during the fight. If The Cultist wins the duel, they declare themself the hero only to realize that their actions could very well make them the villain.

Regardless of who wins the duel, the Cultist’s alternate costume will be unlocked.

  • If activated, the «increase speed when out of combat» effect will work for both players, since they technically are not fighting enemies and are at the Breach.
  • The guns in the cultists past can run out of ammo, despite the game not showing the ammo counter.

Exit The Gungeon

Alongside the other gungeoneers, the Cultist must fight to escape the now collapsing Gungeon. At the end of the game, the Cultist manages to reach the escape ship, but is left behind by the other gungeoneers.

Barrels[]

Barrels contain elemental goop. Interacting with a barrel will roll it and leave a trail of goop. Bullets cause barrels to explode, splashing the area with long-lasting goop.

Sprite Function
Explosive barrels explode when shot. Enemies and Gungeoneers alike are damaged by exploding barrels. Dodge rolling through an explosive barrel destroys it without causing an explosion.
Exactly the same as Explosive Barrels. Extremely rare.
Water barrels leave water when rolled or shot. The water overrides other liquids and can be electrified to deal damage to enemies.
Oil barrels trail oil when rolled or shot. Explosions and fire weapons ignite the oil, dealing significant damage to walking enemies.
Toxic barrels spread poison when rolled or shot. Enemies that step on the goop are continuously hurt for a few seconds.

Barrels can be rolled into corridors and other rooms. Barrels do not roll into pits, but stop right at the edge of the pit, making it difficult to roll them anywhere else. Enemies, particularly Bullet Kin, tend to be distracted by rolling barrels and shoot them.

Water barrels in the Keep of the Lead Lord roll slower than other barrels, so that maneuvering them into the Fireplace is practical.

Rainbow Chests[]

Rainbow chests have a 0.0333% chance to replace a regular chest. Chests found upon clearing a room have a 0.001% chance to become a rainbow chest in addition to the normal 0.0333% chance, effectively a 0.0343% chance. Rainbow chests also have a chance to disguise themselves as brown chests, only revealing themselves once opened, broken, or shot with a weapon that leaves water/goop.

Rainbow chests are never locked. However, they can be locked when they appear as a brown chest.

Rainbow chests contain 8 items and/or guns, which consist of approximately 15% , 54% and 31% . They can also transform into synergy chests upon being opened, containing 8 items and/or guns that synergize with items/weapons currently held, similar to an actual synergy chest.

Rainbow Run

Hegemony Credits[]

Hegemony Credit
Ammonomicon Entry
Accepted Galaxy-Wide
Standard currency throughout Hegemony of Man controlled systems.

Used by the Acquisitions Department to order new guns and items for storage in the Gungeon.

Hegemony Credits are found upon:

  • Defeating a boss.
    • Clearing a boss without taking damage will double the amount of Hegemony Credits received. This can exceed the maximum amount of credits dropped as shown below.
    • The amount is not doubled if flawlessly defeating a boss during a Rainbow Run. It is only slightly increased.
  • Finishing a hunting quest.
  • Rarely found upon clearing a room.
  • Picking up the Briefcase of Cash.
  • Finishing the tutorial for the first time.

Hegemony Credits are used to:

  • Purchase items in The Breach that will show up in future runs.
  • Fix shortcuts.
  • Use the Boss Rush.
  • Acquire the blessing of the Sorceress.
  • Activate Challenge Mode.
  • Unlock yellow skin.
  • Play as The Paradox.
  • Play as The Gunslinger.

A total of 1804 Hegemony Credits is required to purchase every gun and item from the shops in The Breach.

The player can’t obtain Hegemony Credits from bosses in a blessed run or a boss rush.

The amount of Hegemony Credits a boss drops is a random amount, based on its floor. The minimum and maximum values per floor are listed below:

Min/Max 1 2/Oub 3/Abbey/4
Min 1 1 2
Max 3 4 5

Very early runs also have highly increased drop values above this maximum.

Hegemony Credits have their own Ammonomicon Entry, interestingly being the only item to not have an indicator of being Passive or Active.

Effects[]

Usage

  • The item must be used on two different guns, which will tape the first gun to the second gun. This consumes the first gun, and makes the second gun (the base gun) fire projectiles from both.
    • The maximum ammo of the two guns is combined.
    • The base gun’s synergies and effects will apply to the consumed gun, while the consumed gun loses all of its own.
  • Duct Tape does not work with infinite ammo guns such as starter guns, Gunther, Blasphemy, Dueling Laser, Elimentaler, and Casey.
  • With multiple Duct Tapes, multiple guns can be taped together, causing the resulting gun to fire the projectiles of all combined guns.

Ammo and Magazines

  • The maximum ammo of the two guns is combined, and firing it uses the amount of ammo taken to fire both guns; typically 2 ammo per shot is consumed.
    • Crown of Guns will consume 4 ammo rather than 2, due to the Crown of Guns firing three shots at once.
    • The ammo given by Microtransaction Gun when duct-taped to another weapon is 400, regardless of the amount of money the player has.
  • Using Duct Tape to attach a gun that reloads to a no-reload gun (such as the Vulcan Cannon) will make the secondary gun useless once you’ve emptied the initial magazine.
  • Weapons with single-round magazines do not automatically reload after every shot if they are taped to another gun.
  • Weapons with no reload such as Demon Head can remove reload time when used as the base weapon in a combination; however, the player will need to manually reload every time the other gun’s magazine is depleted. If the player can reload fast enough manually, Beam type weapons give the first gun an infinite clip.
  • Duct taping synergized infinite ammo guns, like the AKEY-47 with the synergy or Betrayer’s Shield with the synergy

However, this only works if the synergizing gun is taped to the other gun while not holding the synergizing item (Shelleton Key or Lies in this case), then the synergizing item is picked up after.

, will give the resulting gun infinite ammo.

Weapon Types

  • Charged guns will still need to be charged when combined with a non-charged gun.
  • If used with a gun that alternates between ammo types, such as M16, Triple Crossbow, Boxing Glove, only the currently equipped ammo will be used in the newly formed gun.
  • Weapons that follow the player’s cursor, such as the RC Rocket, will be fired directly forwards for a short period before they can be guided by the cursor.

Synergies and Unique Effects

  • The base gun’s synergies and unique effects apply to the consumed gun.
  • The consumed gun loses its synergies and unique effects.
    • If Patriot is taped to another gun, its fire rate will no longer increase as it is fired.
    • If Really Special Lute is taped to another gun, its buff will no longer function.
    • If AC-15 is taped to another gun while powered up, the gun will maintain its powered form even when the player loses armor, effectively giving the Nanomachines synergy for free.
    • If Microtransaction Gun is taped to another gun, it will no longer take away money per shot.

Using Duct Tape on either gun in a dual wield synergy, such as Smiley’s Revolver and Shades’s Revolver, will remove all the effects of that synergy.

Notes[]

  • Until the Gunslinger is unlocked, it is impossible to reach the Gun That Can Kill The Past with the Paradox. Although the entrance to Bullet Hell will be closed, the Lich will always grab the Paradox as they walk past and bring them to the next chamber unless Bullet Hell has not been unlocked by killing the past of the main 4 Gungeoneers.
    • Once the Gunslinger is unlocked, the entrance to Bullet Hell is open as normal and the Gun That Can Kill The Past is accessible.
    • However, if Bullet Hell has not been unlocked, then the Paradox is forced to end the run with the Gun That Can Kill The Past, as the Lich will not pull the Paradox into Bullet Hell. The credits will show as if using the Gun That Can Kill The Past without the Bullet That Can Kill The Past.
  • The Paradox cannot take the Bullet That Can Kill The Past.
  • The Paradox can start with a starting weapon from a Gungeoneer that has not been unlocked yet, such as Robot’s Right Hand

It is also possible to get a weapon skin that has not been unlocked yet.

    .

  • In versions prior to v2.1.6, The Paradox can start with the Old Crest.
  • In versions prior to v2.1.5, The Paradox can start with the Bullet That Can Kill The Past.
  • Rifts can appear in Shortcuts.
  • The Paradox is necessary to unlock The Gunslinger.
  • The Paradox’s appearance changes to a random Gungeoneer and outfit every time they dodge-roll, flip a table, or roll a barrel.
    • It is likely that the unused character Eevee

While forcing the game to select Paradox as a character through modded clients, the name Eevee itself is used in place of Paradox, which supports this theory.

was made to prototype this behavior.

    • Sliding over a table does not change the appearance of The Paradox.
    • If The Paradox picks up an item that changes their appearance (e.g. Clown Mask), that appearance will be added to the pool of outfits they can change into.
  • The Paradox uses the sprite of all other Gungeoneers with the same shadowy filter when fighting the Resourceful Rat

If the Paradox has low health during the Resourceful Rat’s third phase, their avatar will constantly «glitch» between all other Gungeoneer’s avatars and a blue screen of death.

    .

  • The items the Paradox has are chosen when you select the character. You can check what guns they have in the Breach

If you are given a cursed gun when selecting the Paradox, the curse animation will play over them while you are still in the Breach.

, but the item will not appear until the run starts.

  • Quick Restarting from the menu will start the new run as the player’s selected default character if they don’t have enough .
  • Playing in Co-op will cause The Cultist

If doing a quick restart, The Cultist and the Paradox will have identical loadouts.

to have a randomized loadout different to the one The Paradox has.

  • If The Paradox respawns with Clone, they will not obtain another item.
  • If the Bullet That Can Kill The Past is acquired through any means, such as cheating, it will still have no effect when the player uses the Gun That Can Kill The Past.
  • If The Paradox spawns with the Gunknight Armor, Gunknight Helmet, Gunknight Gauntlet, or Gunknight Greaves, The Paradox will start with two shields instead of one. This is because you obtain these items in the breach, which is chamber 0 in the game code.
  • If you kill the Lich while in Rainbow Mode, and you don’t have Gunslinger unlocked, you will start as Gunslinger from the beginning to unlock them, but the Rainbow mode will still be active.
  • Playing The Paradox with a blessing will not carry over onto the Gunslinger.
  • Killing the Lich as The Paradox without having unlocked Gunslinger does not count as an actual Lich kill, and will not add his respective entry to the Ammonomicon nor will it unlock his respective unlockables.
  • It is unlikely but not impossible for The Paradox to spawn with a synergy between its gun and its item.

Trivia[]

  • Nicknames that NPCs refer to the Robot as include:
    • Machine
    • Automaton
    • Android
    • Mechano-man
    • Can-opener
    • Robert
    • Number 4
    • Colonel Klink
    • Toaster
    • Metal Head
  • Prior to patch 1.0.7, The Robot didn’t get any armor from picking up Master Rounds

Prior to the Advanced Gungeons & Draguns Update, The Robot did not get from items that grant heart containers.

    .

  • The nickname «Colonel Klink» is possibly a reference to the old American television show, Hogan’s Heroes, where Colonel Klink fits in the role of an oblivious colonel at a WWII camp.
  • The nickname «Number 4» is possibly a reference to the movie Short Circuit, where the main character is named Number 5.
  • The Robot’s starting gun is called «Robot’s Right Hand»; however, the art for the boss versus screen shows it readying its left hand, and not its right. This could be because of an inconsistency created by mirroring the art or, while unlikely, an implication that The Robot has swapped hands as to keep firing with its dominant hand.
  • The Robot’s past and alternate costume are references to the Terminator franchise.
    • The minions summoned by the Last Human resemble the T-800 Terminators.
    • The beginning of The Robot’s past where he boots up is the same as the T-800 Terminator boot-up, with the red screen and systems activating.
  • EMP-R0R’s appearance is a reference to Hal 9000.
  • The arena’s walls are filled with references to various franchises and games including (but not limited to):
    • A drawing of Mettaton from the game Undertale.
    • «Bots don’t shiv» is a reference to the phrase «I don’t shiv» from Batman: The Dark Knight Returns.
    • A drawing of a Reaper from the game Mass Effect
    • A drawing that refers to a jailbot of Superjail!.
    • A drawing of the «Robotology» religion symbol from .
    • A drawing of a Cylon from the Battlestar Galactica franchise.
    • A pair of drawings of Tom Servo and Crow T. Robot from Mystery Science Theater 3000.
    • A pair of drawings of Atlas and P-Body from the game Portal 2.
    • A drawing of an E Tank from the Megaman franchise.
    • Eight empty squares surrounding a «W» in the center, referencing the stage select screens from the Megaman franchise.
  • The robot sitting beside EMP-R0R resembles a sentinel from the Matrix franchise.
  • The minions of the Last Human turn into critters upon death. This is a reference to the Sonic franchise.
  • The other robots talk to each other using the word ‘ye’. This is a reference to .
    • Next to EMP-R0R stands a device resembling a hookah except with a plug, a reference to the act of «jacking off» from Futurama.
    • EMP-R0R’s pose and Roman styling may be a reference to Hedonismbot from Futurama.
  • According to the Ammonomicon entry for Robot’s Left Hand, the Robot, as well as most other robots, is left-handed.
  • The Robot’s face is made of keyboard symbols.
  • This character may be inspired by «??? (Blue Baby)» From The Binding of Isaac.

Strategy[]

  • The Lich’s Eye Bullets allow the player to have any synergy that a gun could have without needing the counterpart. For example, the player can have the Cactus and get the Cactus Flower synergy without needing Broccoli or Orange.
  • The Lich’s Eye Bullets allow the player to be wild with any item or weapon that has Synergies, so the player doesn’t need to worry about getting strong items for later portions of the run, and can use money for armor, keys, or ammo.
  • Many weak guns are now much more powerful thanks to his passive, e.g. Cactus and Flare Gun, since these guns have many significant synergies. As a result, the strength of many guns is different for the Gunslinger compared to other Gungeoneers.
  • It is especially beneficial for the Gunslinger to go to secret floors for more opportunities to pick up powerful weapons.
  • The Shop many times sells low quality guns that usually are not worth purchasing for other gungeoneers. However, the Gunslinger’s passive can sometimes make them excellent options for a cheap price.

Trivia[]

  • Gunslinger was created on the side as art by Joe of Dodge Roll while the other developers worked on the main game.
  • The Gunslinger first appeared in the game files in the Advanced Gungeons & Draguns Update, but was not playable until the A Farewell to Arms update.
  • The Gunslinger’s appearance resembles that of Clint Eastwood in A Fistful of Dollars. Considering how the Lich resembles Lee Van Cleef’s character in the movie The Good, the Bad and the Ugly, who serves as the antagonist of the same narrative universe, further connections between the Lich and the Gunslinger being the same, one being bad and the other good, can be made. There is also a resemblance to Justice from Afro Samurai which ties in with the Number 2 being included in the game.
  • The time count shown at the end of the Gunslinger’s unlocking run is the time of both runs combined.
  • The poncho he wears seems to be alive, since it has a face on it which blinks during his idle animation. This, however, does not change any of the gameplay.
    • This may be a reference to Dave of Dodge Roll declaring on Twitter that he will make everything in the Gungeon a mimic, the Gunslinger wearing a «mimic poncho» would make even the player a «mimic» by proxy.
    • When petting the dog the poncho will smile.
  • According to the description of Slinger, he became known as the Gunslinger because he literally slings guns at his foes once they run out of ammo.
  • His injured portrait during the Punchout fight with Resourceful Rat shows his eyes to be Bullets, suggesting he has been using bullets as prosthetic eyes even before he became the Lich.
  • The Gunslinger lacks an animation for missing the Resourceful Rat with a left punch. Doing so will instead show a right punch.
  • Unlike the other Gungeoneers, the back of his character icon (seen when selecting a character in the Breach) depicts a bullet resembling the Lich’s skull.
  • A special rendition of the Lich’s battle theme is played during the fight with the Paradox Liches, making it the second soundtrack in the game to feature lyrics next to the main Enter the Gungeon theme.
  • The Gungeon’s appearance on the final screen of the Gunslinger’s past seems to closely resemble that of a sword, possibly referencing one of Blockner

This also potentially implies that the Gungeon used to possess an affinity towards melee weapons, rather than to guns.

‘s quotes, «The other dungeons me and Manny used to loot never had any guns. It was always sharp metal.»
