DnD 3.5 comparison[]

  • Lore was used in NWN as a collective version of DnD 3.5’s knowledge and other information skills. NWN2 includes it for the same reasons.
  • The decipher script and profession skills are not included in NWN2.
  • School Specialization is handled differently, Prohibited Schools usually involving player choice (although limited), and some specialist choices having two prohibited schools. In NWN2 the prohibited schools are pre-chosen.
  • In DnD rules, the additional spell per spelllevel of a specialist has to be of the specialists school. This isn’t implemented in NWN2.
  • Universal Spells are a separate ‘school’ of spells which are protected from the restriction from Prohibited Schools

Bargaining and Mephasm’s Infernal Token[]

Once you have recruited Ammon Jerro in Act III and convinced him to share his Gold Filigree Charm recipe with the PC, it is possible to summon Mephasm at Crossroad Keep. Once summoned, the player may choose to bargain with him. Mephasm may offer to bargain for gold, enchanted items or an ability boosting item in the form of an object titled «infernal token of Mephasm.» The token will passively boost an ability of your choosing by 3 points simply by keeping it in your inventory (and not in a storage container, such as a bag of holding).  Like almost all other ability enhancing items, its bonus will not normally stack with others.  Mephasm may offer the token in exchange for the PC’s «most prized possession.» The check for this item is supposed to be determined as follows:

  1. Each time you enter the courtyard, check your gloves if your main class is Monk, check your armor if your main class is Sorcerer, Warlock, or Wizard, and check your main hand weapon for any other class.
  2. You must have 8 or more levels in a class for it to be considered your main class.
  3. If your weapon is the Silver Sword of Gith, fall back on armor.
  4. You must have already bargained for the following three items:
    • Weapon: The Angry Soul: +3 Club, with 1d6 lightning & DC14 save vs Fear for 2 rounds/hit.
    • Armor:  Mask of Death: Death Armor (3), Finger of Death (13) and Vampiric Touch (5).  Each has spell/effect has one use/day.
    • Something else: Boots of the Shifting Sands: Dex -1, Earthquake (20) 1 use/day and and Haste (10) 4 uses/day
  5. The item selected in this way must be the same the last three times you entered the courtyard and must currently be equipped when you talk to Mephasm for that bargaining option to be available.

Failing to meet all of the above criteria may result in Mephasm not making this final bargaining offer.  Depending on when you summon Mephasm for the first time, and whether or not you meet the above criteria (e.g. if you didn’t have your PC using the same qualifying item — usually a weapon — often enough) prior to bargaining with him, the trade option for the infernal token may never appear.

Be aware there are severe bugs that prevent the game from checking the favorite item properly.  Specifically:

  • Mephasm will take your favorite weapon instead of armor if you are an arcane spellcaster — and
  • If your main hand weapon is selected by Mephasm then neither its type, value or power will matter: whether it’s a plain un-enchanted dagger, a Holy Avenger or the Silver Sword of Gith (if that happens to be the qualifying weapon your PC has been wielding), that is what Mephasm will take from you; it simply has to be what the game mechanics identifies as your PC’s favorite weapon.

If you are playing a good aligned character, it makes little sense to choose to have Mephasm’s Infernal Token boost Charisma because Joy (if recruited to the keep) may ultimately offer a charm that does the same.

Mephasm is available as a summons to Hellfire Warlocks via the Summon Baatezu feat. He will not offer to bargain In this capacity and will never turn on the party, despite dire warnings indicated in the feat’s description.

DnD 3.5 Comparison[]

  • Domains grant one spell per spell level, but due to an already enhanced spell list for Clerics and the difficulty of implementing some PnP spells in NWN2, this is reduced to 2-5 spells per domain.
  • Domain choice is restricted by deity choice in PnP DnD which should be possible in custom content using the DomainID columns in the nwn2_deities.2da. Unfortunately these columns seemingly have no effect in game.
  • Additionally, too many domains from PnP DnD are missing in NWN2, which means that some deities (Callarduran Smoothhands, Finder Wyvernspur, and Flandal Steelskin) don’t even have the required minimum of two different domains if you were to only select domains that the above deites actually provide. For example, clerics of Callarduran Smoothhands can choose the domains Cavern, Craft, Earth, and Gnome in PnP DnD, but only the Earth domain also exists in NWN2.

Society[]

A street scene in Neverwinter in the 1360s DR.

Through the mid-to-late 1300s, Neverwinter was known as a friendly, charming, cosmopolitan, and cultured city, without being quaint, arrogant, or grasping. They displayed good but quiet manners and liked a job done well, with efficiency and dedication. Even merchants from Amn and Calimshan, who had a poor opinion of the cities of the North, considered Neverwinter to be a civilized place. The Neverwintans avoided conflict and controversy, and were considered to be quiet, mannered, literate, efficient, and hard-working folk, who had great respect for deadlines as well as for the property and happiness of others. They believed in «following one’s weird», as they put it, a term for whatever odd or even reckless pursuit one took to make them happy. Amid all the weird-following tolerance and variety in the city, there was a great respect for peacefulness, law, and order.

After the foundation of the Alagondar royal family in the late years of the 14th century DR, the Neverwintans became a very patriotic people, proud of their leaders and their city.

After the destruction of the city in 1451 DR, the Neverwintans showed a new facet: stubbornness and determination. Many survivors remained in the city, and ever since had demonstrated the resolution to rebuild Neverwinter to its former glory and to defend her from many dangers, both mortal and extraplanar alike.

Religion

The main faiths in 14th-century Neverwinter were those of Helm, Oghma, and Tyr. The temples of the Hall of Justice and House of Knowledge catered to the faithful of Tyr and Oghma, respectively, while those of Helm congregated in nearby Helm’s Hold.

With the deaths of Helm and Tyr in the year before the Spellplague, their faiths were replaced by those of Torm and his subordinate deity Bahamut, as well as the faith of Selûne, as her followers wanted to bring hope to the peoples of Neverwinter. By 1479 DR, the faith of Asmodeus had become popular as well, and the ashmadai had great influence in the city’s politics.Kelemvor’s faithful also had a strong presence in the city since before 1479 DR, and members of this faith were focused on cleansing Neverdeath of undead and other evil forces.

The Neverwintans never stopped revering Tyr, however, despite his death. When the god returned to life after the Second Sundering, his faith was quickly accepted again, becoming as popular as it was before.

In the late 15th century, as Neverwinter slowly restored itself as a cosmopolitan city, temples of many faiths became common in all districts of the city.

Windows»

    Win

    +

    I

    .

    Enter

    Win

    +

    R

Features[]

Game client

As with the original NWN, NWN2 supports multiple players. Players are able to control parties with up to 3 non-player characters. The party system has been revised to include ‘companions’ rather than ‘henchmen’.

Claims for character creation include advanced character customization, scaling of characters and monster, and deeper equipment customization. The game supports subraces in addition to the primary races. Static 2D portraits have been replaced with 3D avatars.

All of the base classes from NWN are present, and the Warlock base class has been added. Characters can choose up to four classes, up from the three supported in NWN. One of the four classes is reserved for a prestige class. All prestige classes from NWN are present in NWN2 except for the Shifter. New prestige classes include Arcane Trickster, Neverwinter Nine, Shadow Thief of Amn, Warpriest, Duelist, and Frenzied Berserker. More closely following Forgotten Realms terminology, Champion of Torm has been renamed Divine Champion and Harper Scout is now Harper Agent.

Characters are limited to 20th level.

NWN2 provides some form of support for many of the deities based on characters alignment, race and class.

NWN2 has a more complete crafting system based on appropriate skills than NWN. This system can be used to customize the visual appearance of weapons and armor, but only when the item is created.

Trivia[]

  • Zhjaeve was voiced by Lisa Emery.
  • Though she is a cleric, she has no actual deity. This may due to the fact the deity system was added very late in the development cycle, though many githzerai clerics do not choose a deity, as it reminds them of the slavery they faced by the Illithids.
  • She has a habit of beginning her sentences with «Know that….». This emphasis of «knowing» oneself is a common and important theme in Githzerai culture.
  • Rarely do you have a chance to gain influence, but as with Ammon, it does nothing to the story. Still, high influence provides extra information about their past during personal conversations.

Official Campaign[]

Mephasm

Mephasm is a retainer of the Still Lord, Prince Levistus, ruler of . Ammon Jerro had made a pact with Levistus, and Mephasm become one of the warlock’s many servants. Mephasm, along with Zaxis, accompanied Jerro to the githyanki hideout in some old Illefarn ruins north of Neverwinter. He had set up a barrier field as a back-up plan in case Zaxis failed to breach Zeeaire’s portal chamber. During the raid, the PC and party arrived searching for Shandra Jerro, who was captive by Zeeaire. Mephasm was being harassed by a few succubi as the player entered the inner complex. After the succubi were killed, Mephasm, claiming to be bound there by the githyanki, instructed the player to «release» him by stating his «truename: Mephasm» so the barrier will fall. As he departed, the barrier coalesced into an «interdimensional sphere,» which he gave the player as a parting gift, noting that they «will meet again.»

The PC encounters Mephasm again at Jerro’s Haven, where he admits he wasn’t completely honest at the githyanki caves and was in the warlock’s employ. He tells them that in order to reach Jerro’s sanctum, he’ll need to get the other fiends to activate a portal.

After the confrontation with Ammon, Shandra begins to break the fiends from their bonds in order to stop her grandfather from killing her comrades. Ammon attacks and kills Shandra in front of Mephasm. As Ammon was stunned by her calling him grandfather, Mephasm told him the truth of his actions, stating that «Blood finds a way, Ammon. Always.» As he began to depart back to Baator, he parted stating «when one carries laws too far, they will take you where I go now.»

Fate[]

  • If the player chooses to take Akachi’s soul on his own, or if the curse is lifted, Okku will leave the party and will return to his barrow to rest. However, when a new threat arises against the people of Rashemi (from Thayans, as shown), it is said that some Rashemi people saw Okku, together with other telthor bears defend the lands & drive the attackers away. Afterwards, he disappears, leaving only corpses of Red Wizards as a reminder of him.
  • If the player chooses to cast Akachi’s soul away, Okku will leave the party to search for the new spirit-eater. It is said that some Rashemi people saw him wandering the land, as if he was searching something (or someone). Being unable to find what he’s looking for, despair fills him, and his glowing fur started to dim. As time passes, the people of Rashemi eventually forgot him, causing his spirit to dissipate.
  • If the player is evil (or wasn’t able to collect all pieces of the mask) and chooses to master the hunger and claim the spirit-eater power as his own, Okku attacks the player together with other NPC party members (after some conversations) when the player returns to the City of the Dead. He is eventually killed.

Mask of the Betrayer[]

Okku was once a powerful bear that roamed the wilds of Rashemen. According to him, he was a descendant of the ancient pack of Bhalla, from primeval times. During the time of the previous Spirit Eater, a noble wizard, Okku and his pack had clashed with said wizard at Lake Tirulag. Though defeated, Okku was spared by the wizard and was asked for help in finding an end to the curse, for which he made an oath. However, no cure was found, and Okku agreed to let the man die in a runed chamber within his barrow and die so the curse would remain sealed.

In truth, the man had received instruction from Lienna on how to seal the curse with the runes at the bottom, as the Founder wanted to keep the true essence of the spirit eater, Akachi, under containment until she could find a permanent solution. Eventually, she had procured the PC, who was tied to the Silver Sword of Gith, and after removing the core shard had him/her placed in the barrow to receive the curse.

When Safiya retrieved the player, the spirits began to awake as the spirit eater had reawakened. One of Okku’s friends, a wolf telthor named Nakata, was suddenly devoured by the spirit eater curse when she confronted the two at the middle barrow, much to the puzzlement of Safiya and the player. By the time they reached the exit, Okku was awakened and not in a good mood. Not wanting the curse to get out, he summoned several telthor and attacked. When defeated, he was seemingly banished and Safiya and the player made their escape.

However, Okku, along with almost all the spirits of southern Rashemen, were alarmed by the spirit eater’s reawakening and soon besieged the gates of Mulsantir, where the player and Safiya were located. Eventually, the player would confront Okku at the gates under directive of Sheva Whitefeather. A fierce battle would ensue, and with Okku empowered by the spirit army, many of the telthors, dryads, and earth elementals fell before Okku was vulnerable.

Upon defeat, he yielded and urged the player to quickly finish him off before it awoke, but it was too late. If the player gave into the hunger, Okku would be devoured. The player could instead spare him by restraining the hunger. If so, Okku would pledge to resume the oath he made for the wizard of years past, to try and help find a way to remove the curse. If the player devours him, his husk is usable to obtain One of Many at Death God’s Vault.

Inhabitants[]

As of 1370 DR, Neverwinter was inhabited mostly by humans, half-elves, and a minority of dwarves. They occupied a small dwarf quarter.

As of 1479 DR, the city was more cosmopolitan, with members of many races living alongside the common human and half-elven families. The rare eladrin and even tieflings were common sights among the citizens. A sizable delegation of dragonborn mercenaries had been hired by Lord Neverember alongside the Mintarn ones. The River District was invaded by a tribe of orcs from Many-Arrows, and although most left when they were recalled by their compatriots in the north, around 1484 DR, a few orcs and half-orcs were still living in Neverwinter as of 1491 DR.

3.5e comparison[]

  • The Parry skill was created by NWN and is not a feature of DnD 3.5. It has returned in NWN2 for the same reasons it was in NWN.
  • Knowledge skills are not in NWN2. The collective Lore skill will be used instead, though without the specific skill synergies.
  • In PnP Neutral Clerics of Neutral deities (with some exceptions, such as Clerics that worship Saint Cuthbert or Wee Jas from the Greyhawk campaign setting) may chose to turn or rebuke undead and if they cast cure spells or inflict spells spontaneously when taking the first level of cleric. In NWN2, neutral clerics of neutral deitys always turn undead and cast cure spells spontaniously.
  • Cleric Domains work somewhat differently in DnD 3.5 than in NWN2:
    • Clerics in PnP must choose two domains from their Deity’s portifolio, and get access to a domain power, as well as one domain spell for each spell level
    • The cleric recieves one domain spell slot on each spell level he has access to, where he can prepare one of his domain spells of that level. Domain spells that are not on the cleric spells list can only be prepared in the domain spell slot, and only the cleric’s domain spells can be prepared in the domain spell slot
