A Meatmass Miracle

Well, as some of you who are reading this probably already know, we finally got update 1.13 out this year and although we feel there’s still quite a lot we need to improve with the game, it’s been great to be able to get updates out again. We feel like this update should address a lot of the issues people had with the game (other than the bugs that went out with it that we’re still working on), especially with the online portion of the game which made it play significantly different to local games. Hopefully, updates should be a lot more frequent from here on out, as we’ve improved our build pipelines a bit a few other things that were making it difficult to get updates out.

Update 1.13

In order to be able to release the update, we needed to fix certain things. And to start fixing things, we needed to review systems that touch on a multitude of parts of the game, including Online, how we build stages, and how we build costumes. Some of these fixes are in this update, such as the new glass fracture and buoyancy system, which not only look substantially better, but also are more optimal (aside from a few bugs we are still working on).

Other systems will take a bit more time to implement into the game, such as an update to the costume system with SuperGenius. Once it’s done, it will significantly improve performance and also give us better flexibility and control over the way costumes look.

Coatsink has also been making many fixes, improvements, and optimisations to the online portion of the game. Some of these are in this update, which is why it now plays a lot more like local play, but there are many more improvements to come!

We have also partnered with Robot Teddy to help us with the game production and business decisions. It has been an invaluable aid to us throughout 2020 and one of the main players to make it possible for us to release this new update while self-publishing Gang Beasts.

Finally, we’d like to mention we also brought Unity onboard early this year to help us with improving our internal tools, pipeline and workflows, optimising, and just in general future-proofing the game. We’re incredibly excited to be able to show the outcomes of this work.

Если Gang Beasts запускается, но сильно тормозит, то перед началом всех процедур следует снизить графику до минимума через настройки игры. Если это не помогло, то придется прибегнуть к помощи сторонних программ для настройки видеокарты:

• NVIDIA Inspector для видеокарт от Nvidia;
• RadeonMod для видеокарт от AMD.

Загрузив программу, запускаем ее. В случае с NVIDIA Inspector нужно запускать файл nvidiaProfileInspector.exe, а не nvidiaInspector.exe. Сверху, в строке «Profiles:» можно выбрать любую игру, которая поддерживается драйверами Nvidia.

Ниже представлены все доступные настройки. Их много, но для того, чтобы ухудшить графику в игре до «картофельной», вполне достаточно всего нескольких, которые находятся в разделе «Antialiasing».

Наибольший прирост производительности дает изменение этих двух параметров:

• Texture filtering — LOD bias;
• Antialiasing — Transparency Supersampling.

Каждая из этих настроек имеет разные значения. Некоторые из них могут делать картинку в Gang Beasts неудобоваримой, поэтому следует попробовать разные комбинации значений, которые дают более-менее сносное играбельную картинку.

В случае с RadeonMod все аналогично: нужно найти настройки, отвечающие за отображение текстур и снижать их до тех пор, пока FPS в игре не станет достаточно высоким.

Stages

We have finished work on the geometry for launch stages (excluding a small number of superficial modifications and props), stages identified as launch stages have had passes to optimise performance, standardise colour schemes, and address gameplay issues, the stages with significant modifications made to geometry are billboard (new billboard sign and catwalk structure), chutes (lowered catwalk and modified pipe works), grind (new meat slurry implementation, new pipework, new articulated grinder implementation, and new catwalk), subway (new scene with modified hanging lights, staircase, prop, and platform geometry) and trucks (new truck geometry and some minor cosmetic modifications).

6 Tope Suicida

Get to a high spot, jump off, and headbutt right as you make contact with the foe

The community refers to this move as a «Body Slam», but that’s not what a real Body Slam. To perform a Tope Suicida players jump onto their opponent from somewhere high. However, making it do damage is a little more complex.

One of the more effective Gang Beast tips to make this more powerful is to use the headbutt while diving. This will cause the player to land on their opponent with an incredible impact, potentially knocking them out straight away. This is a dangerous move though and has the potential to knock out the user, not to mention the risk of missing.

Tips & Tricks (Special Movements & Tactics)

There are so many fighting styles to Gang Beasts I figured it’d be nice to list off some of the tactics and extra mobilities you may not know about.

While I normally play Keyboard, for the ease of writing this guide we’ll link the controls to buttons you would use on an Xbox Controller.

• Jump – (A)
• Duck – (B)
• Kick – (X)
• Lift – (Y)
• Left arm – (LT)
• Right arm – (RT)
• Anolog Stick – Movement

Refer to all tutorials below to these controls.

Movement

Let’s begin with movement, as the first step to beginning a game is taking the first step forward. Here are some basics to list off:

• Sprinting – Hold (A) while moving any direction.
• Sitting – Hold (A).
• Lay Forward – Hold (B).
• Lay Backward – Hold (X).
• Crawl – Hold (B) while moving any direction.
• Grab – Hold (RT) or (LT).

Now that we’ve got the basics covered, lets get a little more advanced.

• Powerslide – When holding (A) to sprint hold (X) to lay backwards and slide.
• Penguin Slide – Same as above but holding (B) to slide on your stomach. Can knock yourself out if you hit a wall hard enough.
• Climbing – When against a wall jump onto it and hold either (LT) or (RT) and then double tap (A) to jump higher while alternating hands to hold onto the wall with. Using both hands works but drains grip strength.
• Backflip – Hold (A) and (X) at the same time. This can knock others out as well as yourself.
• Body Slam – Hold (A) and (B) at the same time. If given height this can force objects like the Crates or Gondolas to snap. Can also knock yourself or whoever you land on out.
• The Flopper – While holding (X) to lay backwards you can repeatedly press (A) to flop on the ground, if done while laying sideways you can actually make yourself spin. Not useful for much but funny to watch. Works best on ice.

Combat

Now here’s where we get to the fun stuff. The main part of this game, floppily kicking everyone elses . Here’s some basics:

• Headbut – Quickly tap (B), has a chance to knock yourself out as well. NOTE: This tends to do more damage when done backwards.
• Kick – Quickly tap (X).
• Jump Kick – Jump (or fall) and when near the level of an enemy head press (X). Instant knockout if hit well enough.
• Holding Punch – While holding (RT or (LT) on another player, preferably making sure you’re holding their shoulder, you can block hits from them while guarentee hits on their face. A good countering for this is headbuts.
• Head Slam – Grab your opponents shoulders you can land some really good headbuts.
• Throwing – If you’re able to grab an opponents legs or head with both hands you can pick them up by holding (Y) and swing them around my spinning the analog stick, after gaining a bit of speed you can let go of the triggers to let them fly.
• Dirt Feeder – Another fun lifting technique is grabbing them by the legs and holding (Y) to get them above you, then while still holding onto them let go of (Y) and it will slam them onto the ground.

Beyond the easy stuff there are some more complicated things that tend to be more situational:

• Resting Knockout – While holding (A), (B), and (X) you will lay there, seemingly resting but a bit twitchy, this tends to make you coil like a spring, if someone walks by you can punch them for a LOT more force while still holding those three buttons. This can end with you flying out of bounds sometimes.
• Knockout Slam – If you get the chance to jump down on an enemy try to grab their head and move it beneath you as you fall, this will knock them out if done properly.
• Hyper Headbutter – If you get the chance to down an enemy you can lay over them on you back with (X) and slam your head down with (B). Try not to knock yourself out. Works well on enemies who fake being downed and while jumping on someone.
• Do You Even Lift? – While holding an enemy constantly lift them with (Y) and drop them with one arm while punching with another. Can be useful for keeping their arms from hitting you but watch out for their kicks.
• Sliding Headbut – While performing a powerslide if someone is in your sliding range try to headbut them, the bonus to speed and distance will give quite the knockback, but it’s not easy to land.

Camera

We have transitioned to Cinemachine procedural camera framework and are currently working to improve support for user modification of the single player camera, group tracking, geometry clipping, camera bias, lerping, and dampening etc. but are seeing significant improvements over the previous camera system. We are also working to standardise the presentation of player information and the post stack implementation (specifically the default parameters for graphics setting).

For reference the issues with settings and resetting inputs, graphics, and other menu settings is being addressed and is expected to be fixed in the 0.7.0 build.

The Elimination Bug

Another bug people have been experiencing lately is the characters not getting eliminated when thrown out of stages. This issue was a weird one, that seems to have manifested itself since the engine upgrade. Gang Beasts being such a physics heavy game, any changes to the engine’s physics can have knock-on effects with the gameplay.

We have tried to fix this a few times and, although each attempt reduced its frequency, it was still being triggered. In this update, we have added two more solutions: one that should stop it from happening, and another that will guarantee that if it happens the players get eliminated anyway. The first measure is adding a few more checks to the characters when they enter an Elimination Volume, so it is more likely to be detected, and expanding these volumes further to increase the chance of detection. The second measure bypasses the physics system entirely, and will always eliminate players regardless of velocities or any other issues inherent to physics that can prevent the first method from working.

4 Climb Leap

Spend some time learning to climb in Gang Beasts and escape from zealous foes by going vertical

This is a movement technique that makes what is normally a rather arduous process quite easy. Climbing can be a bit of a bother sometimes. It’s certainly possible, but newer players can often have trouble coordinating where they need to lift their limbs and let go of the surface to climb up it.

The Climb Leap makes this process far easier and infinitely quicker. Grab onto a wall with both hands and repeatedly jump up the wall by double-tapping the jump button. One of the best Gang Beasts tips is to practice this move in a private match first, as it’s a precise trick to pull off, but it could save your life (plus, it looks rather funny).

12 Breaking Out Of A Hold

One of the most frustrating things in Gang Beasts is being unable to escape an opponent who is dead-set on never letting go. It’s not necessarily a death sentence to get into an inescapable hold, though, and the game offers multiple effective ways to break out.

Sometimes the player is the one who doesn’t want to let go as their opponent might be trying to throw them off the side of the stage. In that case, many of these tactics still work effectively because of the extremely close range and ability to reposition oneself.

Spam The Jump Button

One of the easiest (and perhaps most intuitive) ways to break free of a neverending hold is to rapidly press the jump button. It’s not a guaranteed escape, and there’s no perfect way to do it, but leaning in different directions and continually pulling away should eventually force the opponent to let go, giving you a second to reposition and get the upper hand.

Headbutt Them

A great move to pull on close-range enemies, like those who are holding you close, is to headbutt them instead of punch. Different controllers have different inputs for the headbutt so be sure to learn which button this is in your setup to easily escape from a hold. Sometimes, this will knock out the enemy for a few seconds too, making it one of the most useful Gang Beasts special moves.

Get A Better Grip On Them

Sometimes the enemy just won’t let go, especially enemies that are trying to avoid being thrown off of a ledge. It’s frustrating to have a foe holding onto the player with just as strong a grip, but there are ways around this. Don’t take both hands off of the opponent, instead go one hand at a time to grab them by a part of their body that they can’t reach you back from, such as on their legs or lower torso.

2 Resting KO

Go into Ragdoll mode by holding down Duck, Kick, and Jump at the same time. Then, press Punch when the opponent comes to check on your body

Like a tiger waiting to pounce, the best attacks are the ones the opponent never sees coming. This is a multi-stage attack with an incredible payoff if it works. It can be a little unreliable as it depends on how the character moves, but it’s devastating when it works.

First, players must «play dead.» This can be done by holding down the duck, kick & jump buttons at once. It will appear as the character is KO’ed, except for some slight twitching and causes the character to coil up like a spring. While holding all three buttons, when someone comes close, punch. The result of this will be anything from an OHKO punch to a glitchy flail that sends both characters flying off of the map. Either way, it’s one of the better Gang Beasts combos to learn and take out enemies unawares.

7 Powerslide

Get a running start, then hold the Headbutt or Kick buttons, depending on if you want to slide head-first or not

Sliding is a fun mode of transportation — much more fun than walking. That’s why Gang Beasts has not just one, but two different slides. These are most effective on slippery surfaces like the sheets of ice in Buoy, but they can be used elsewhere too.

To do it, build up some momentum and then hold the kick or headbutt button. Holding kick will make the character slide on their back, holding headbutt will make them slide on their front. While it looks cool is enough, it can also be used offensively as a slide tackle in the right context.

2021, What the Future Holds for Us

We have a multitude of things we’re working on to improve Gang Beasts. We plan to completely overhaul our UI, which is really in need of some TLC. We’ll also be improving the game’s visuals now we’ve moved to Unity 2020.

Our costume system update is getting very close to being finished, which will give us better flexibility and control over the way costumes look (as in better use of tints and textures), and let us bring back some of the legacy costumes, like the “Christmas baubles”! This should also help us improve turnaround times on creating new costumes as it’s significantly easier to work with.

3 Flying Headbutt

Get a running start, hold down the Jump button, and quickly press the Headbutt button when close

There are many ways to pull off headbutts in this game, and it’s one of the most iconic Gang Beasts’ special moves. It is by far the game’s strongest default attack but does come with the risk of a self-KO if done poorly. The Flying Headbutt is a move that almost guarantees a self-KO, but it’s really fun and extremely satisfying to nail.

The way to do it is very simple — run, leap, headbutt. Holding down the headbutt button is usually best as the character will flop forward as they do so. Colliding with basically anything other than the opponent will be sure to cause a self-KO, but it’s worth it for the few times it hits.
