Chapter 1 — Destination Despair

«Y-You’re telling us to begin…but what are we supposed to do?»

«Oh…So that’s why we found duct tape there.»

«Does that mean…the killer painted them in advance?»

«But…With Peko’s height, I don’t think she’d be able to circuit breaker in the office…»

«L-Laxatives…?»

«Let’s just dismiss Peko’s stomachache as a coincidence…and go back to discussing the blackout…»

«T-Trashy skank!?»

«They probably messed with the breaker.»

«By the way, I’m not a trashy skank!»

«M-Me too! Please…Take me home already!»

«P-Power cord…?»

«H-Huh? Wh-Wh-What…?»

«P-P-Please wait!»

«U-Um, um…um… How should I put this…? Um…»

«I-Is Nagito…*really* the killer?»

«I-I already know that, but…Fngh…There’s just something a little strange…»

«A-A-Aaaah! I-I’m sorry!»

«I-I think it’s strange that…»

«U-Um…»

«Um…You know…»

«Ugh… Never mind…»

«But…Based on the entry wounds on Byakuya’s body, the actual weapon should be roughly five mm in diameter…»

«Eeeeeeeek! N-Not a whorehouse!»

«I-I’m sorrrrrrrryyyyyyy!»

«B-But…there is another reason why I don’t think Nagito is the killer…»

«Based on what we’ve discussed…Byakuya was killed under the table, right?»

«Well…Even if that’s true, I feel Nagito looks…you know…clean…»

«Nyehhh… I’m not talking about your looks!»

Appearance

Mikan is a young woman in her early twenties, around 22 at youngest. Her virtual avatar in the Neo World Program appeared as her 17 year old self. She has long, choppy, dark purple hair that is cut unevenly as a result of bullying. She has light, greyish-purple eyes. There is a beauty mark under her left eye’s corner. She wears a nurse uniform which consists of a pale pink, collared short-sleeved shirt with puffed sleeves.

Mikan wears a white apron over this which is tied behind her neck with a ribbon. There are two red lines on the left side of the apron, one going down to her middle and another, short red line perpendicular to the vertical one. A short pale blue pleated skirt is visible under her apron. Mikan has bandages wrapped around most of her left arm and right leg. Additionally, she has a band-aid on her left knee cap and wears white socks and shoes.

During her high school years, she wore Hope’s Peak Academy uniform. She had a band-aid on her right cheek and bandages wrapped around her right leg and left knee.

As the Ultimate Despair, she wears white nurse clothing along with a hat. She has bandages wrapped around her right arm and left leg. She wears one elbow length medical glove on her left arm, as well as a glove on her right hand that only goes up to her bandaged wrist.

Canon

The reason people ship this is because at first, Nagito worries about Mikan, as he scolds Hajime after thinking he bullied her and asks if she’s okay after having one of her many exaggerated falls. He is also very humbled during the first trial when he mistakenly assumed that Mikan complimented his appearance when she pointed out that there wasn’t any blood on him.

After Nagito caught the Despair Disease, Mikan took care of him along with the others. However, she also caught the disease, and despite his terrible condition, he noticed that she had fallen into despair. Because of this, and the murders she committed for the sake of despair, Nagito lost all respect for her and considered her an enemy, worthy of the name «Ultimate Despair». Unlike the others, he wasn’t fooled by her actions during the trial and he bitterly refused to forgive her.

However, Mikan told Nagito that he’s wrong and claimed that she had killed for «her beloved». Somewhat mockingly, she said that Nagito doesn’t understand because he doesn’t have anyone to love and isn’t accepted by anyone, leaving him at a loss for words.

Later though, after Nagito and Mikan awaken from their comatose state, he doesn’t seem to hold any more hatred towards her. This probably means that Nagito’s original relationship with Mikan, which was mostly him not paying attention to her, although thinking her talent is amazing, has returned.

In Nagito’s free time events, he used «Meeting a nice nurse after getting into a car crash» to explain his luck cycle, however, it’s not confirmed that he was actually talking about Mikan.

In the hope arc, when Mikan tried to talk to Makoto, Nagito moved her out of the way, making her fall, and sending Ibuki to chase after her

Quotes

Mikan“Well…Even if that’s true, I feel Nagito looks…you know…clean…”
Nagito“Nobody’s ever complimented me on my appearance before! Not even my own mother!”
Mikan“Nyehhh…I’m not talking about your looks!”
— Mikan and Nagito while talking about Nagito probably not being the culprit, during the first Class Trial in Danganronpa 2.
“If she ended up like that just from «remembering»… Then all along, Mikan was never worth being a Symbol of Hope. Even if her words were influenced by the Despair Disease, if the disease turned her into that… If she lost herself to a simple disease, she was definitely unworthy of being a Symbol of Hope. So…let’s just move on. C’mon, let’s take all this despair and change it into hope!”
— Nagito losing his respect for Mikan after her Despair persona is revealed after the third Class Trial.

Canon

Mikan seems to have formed a liking for Hajime as he is the first person (on the island) to approach and speak to her, not wishing to bully her but only to have a casual conversation. Though nervous and stuttering at first, she gradually lightens up, even asking him to come back and talk to her again.

Hajime is also the first person she admits to that she is glad that there is nobody to stomp on her and abuse her on the island. Mikan also chases Hajime around with a syringe a few times, wanting to give him an injection, and is found sleeping on him several times in Chapter 3. In the third trial, she uses him to give herself an alibi in the morning when they first discover the corpse.

In Chapter 3, when Hajime accuses Mikan of killing Ibuki Mioda and Hiyoko Saionji, she becomes furious, and obviously denies this. This act upsets Hajime, who doesn’t want to believe she’s the culprit as much the others, who are in shock at his accusation. Despite this, Hajime reluctantly shows evidence that points to her being the murderer. He tells Mikan to give it up, so he can still believe in her in the end. But Mikan’s personality has already changed, and she is executed, leaving nothing but her malice for Hajime and the others.

In her free-time events, when Mikan explains her reasons for becoming a nurse, Hajime is disturbed and is afraid to show any signs of weakness or sickness around her. However, he also feels bad for her and believes that she is not to be blamed for the way she is now.

During the events of Island Mode, Mikan is very happy to be Hajime’s friend and has a clear romantic interest in him. In her ending, she is even ready to go as far as to cripple him in some way so that they can be together forever. However, Hajime proposes to her instead, causing her to declare that she would become his own private nurse and take care of him forever.

Quotes

Mikan“Ah!”
Mondo“Hey, whoa, the table’s all messed up! You sure you’re okay!?”
Mikan“Eeek, I’m so sorry! But don’t worry about me! Mondo, you…”
Mondo“L-Like I said, what’s the matter!? Chill out already!”
Mikan“Eeek! I-I’m sorry! I’ll apologize, so please don’t hit me!”
Mondo“Th-There’s no way I’d ever do such a loser thing as raise my hand against a girl! So calm down…and hurry up and close your legs already.”
Mikan“Y-You’re not mad?”
Mondo“I’m not mad… Sorry I yelled. It’s a bad habit of mine… I’ve freaked out Chihiro before, even when I tried to be careful.”
— Mikan being worried about Mondo and the latter being nice to her in their event in Ultimate Talent Development Plan.
Mikan“Y-You surprised me too… Um… Sorry for causing you so much trouble!”
Mondo“Don’t worry about it. Now…what did you want with me?”
Mikan“O-Oh, yeah! Can you hold out your hand, Mondo?”
Mondo“My hand? Oh…it’s bleeding a little. I musta scratched it on something…”
Mikan“A little!? Your blood is dripping onto the floor!”
Mondo“Ah, so that’s what was the matter… Oh yeah, you’re a nurse, huh?”
Mikan“Yes…um…I’ll clean it up, so…can you come to the infirmary?”
Mondo“You don’t gotta worry about this. My fists get bloody from fights all the time.”
— Mikan worrying about Mondo’s injury while he doesn’t seem to notice the issue.
Mikan“Th-That’s not okay. Even if the injury is small, it can still get infected. A-And about fights…I can’t stop you, but at least let me treat your injuries.”
Mondo“Okay, I got it… I’ll do what you say.”
Mikan“R-Really?”
Mondo“Yeah…I promise. So don’t start crying again.”
— Mondo promises to listen to Mikan’s advice.
Mondo“Hey…what are you doing here?”
Mikan“Um, just standing… Um… I mean… I’m just… Mondo…it seems like you haven’t injured yourself today. So…that’s good.”
Mondo“Do I *look* like someone who hurts himself regularly?”
Mikan“ N-No, it’s not like I don’t trust you… That’s not what I mean! I saw where you got hurt before, so I got worried…I don’t think you’re a klutz like me!”
Mondo“Hey, relax. I’m not mad or anything.”
Mikan“S-Sorry…when I see someone like you, I get nervous…”
Mondo“What, my face scare you? I can control my temper well enough, but I can’t do shit about my face.”
Mikan“Th-That’s not what I meant…sorry!”
— Mikan checking up on Mondo’s health again in another event in the bonus mode.
Mikan“Oh…I apologized again!”
Mondo“You’re pushing it…but I’m not gonna yell at you. I’ve decided to really try to keep that rage in check.”
Mikan“I’ll try not to cry or apologize too much in front of you, so…please forgive me…”
Mondo“Right. Good luck.”
— Mondo promises to control his rage while Mikan promises to cry and apologize less around him.

«Danganronpa Another Episode: Ultra Despair Girls»,

Аниме-сериал, «Danganronpa 3: The End of Hope’s Peak High School», служит завершением (и прелюдией) к сюжетной линии академии «Пик Надежды», показанной в вышеупомянутых играх.

«Danganronpa V3: Killing Harmony»

Fanon

The ship sailed as a result of numerous ship tease on Mikan’s side, such as the scenes where she falls asleep on top of Hajime. Their Free Time Events and Island Mode events further fueled the ship, with Hajime even proposing to Mikan in the ending of Mikan’s Island Mode.

The ship is quite popular, even though both characters had several other popular ships in their debut season. Danganronpa 3 developing some of their other ships decreased the popularity of this one, although it still has a large number of shippers.

Fan art often shows Mikan taking care of Hajime as his personal nurse, which is a reference to her promise to him in their Island Mode ending; or a wedding between the two, referencing Hinata’s proposal to Tsumiki from the same event.

Biography

Mikan, identified as the murderer.

In Danganronpa 3: The End of Hope’s Peak Academy, Mikan is a student of Class 77-B enrolled in Hope’s Peak Academy with the other Remnants of Despair. Among the members of the Remnants of Despair, excluding Izuru Kamukura, she is the first to fall into despair after being brainwashed by Junko Enoshima and becoming a part of Ultimate Despair.

Following the fall of Hope’s Peak and the beginning of The Tragedy, Mikan joined the rest of Ultimate Despair in spreading chaos across the ruined world. She was eventually apprehended by the Future Foundation and put into the Neo World Program for rehabilitation.

After catching Despair Disease in Chapter 3 and regaining her school memories in Danganronpa 2, Mikan set up a plan to murder Ibuki Mioda, who also contracted Despair Disease, but ended up murdering both Ibuki and Hiyoko Saionji after the latter witnessed her attempt to murder Ibuki. After she confessed that she had murdered for the sake of “her beloved”, Monokuma dragged her to her execution. However, due to this happening in the Neo World Program, her physical body remained in a comatose state following the end of the simulation.

The illusory Mikan appeared in the 30-minutes long OVA titled Super Danganronpa 2.5: Nagito Komaeda and the Destroyer of the World as a part of Nagito Komaeda’s world.

Mikan later awakens from her coma and together with her classmates helps the Future Foundation in stopping Ryota Mitarai from brainwashing the world with his Hope Video. With the other awakened Remnants of Despair, Mikan decides to atone for her sins as the former member of Ultimate Despair.

Trivia

  • While her title in the official English translation is «Ultimate Nurse«, Mikan’s original title is «Ultimate Health Committee Member«. The «health committee» or «health and hygiene committee» (since 保健 hoken means both «health preservation» and «hygiene»), is a common student committee in Japanese high schools with the duty of preparing and administering first aid during school events, monitoring the school’s state of sanitation and promoting health-preserving behavior.
  • Mikan’s birthday is May 12.
  • There is a strong possibility that Mikan suffers from dependent personality disorder, as she fits nearly all of the symptoms. However, there is a chance Mikan also has social anxiety disorder, because of stuttering in speech, nervousness in social interaction, fear of bothering, boring, or offending others, and she is easily upset.

Canon

The two never interacted on-screen in canon. However, they share two events together in Danganronpa V3’s bonus mode, Ultimate Talent Development Plan.

In one event, Mikan had been chasing after Mondo (because his hand was bleeding everywhere, which he didn’t notice), only issue is that she keeps tripping and falling. She then begins to apologize repeatedly. Mondo yells at her to calm down, leading Mikan to start crying and pleading with him not to hit her. Mondo, of course, says he’d never do anything so pathetic and apologizes for shouting and promises he’s not mad at her. When Mikan calms down and asks him to come to the infirmary so she can treat his injury, Mondo says getting his hands all scraped up from fights is no big deal to him, but he agrees anyway so Mikan won’t cry anymore.

In the other event, Mikan checks up on Mondo to see if he injured himself again. Mondo is at first annoyed that Mikan views him as the type to injure himself often, but upon seeing her afraid of him, he assures her that he’s not mad at her for thinking so and promises that he’ll control his rage.

TUMBLR

Personality

Mikan suffers from extremely low self-esteem as a result of severe abuse and bullying. She is easily intimidated, cries easily, apologizes a lot, and stutters over words. She constantly worries about bothering, boring, or offending others, even going as far to ask Hajime Hinata whether it would be alright to remember his name during her introduction. She is very skilled at reading people’s faces, but she over analyzes them and is quick to conclude that she is disliked by those around her. Her fragile personality makes her an easy target for Hiyoko Saionji’s cruelty.

Mikan is also ridiculously clumsy and often ends up in embarrassing and revealing poses, leading her to apologize profusely (it is heavily implied that she exaggerates her clumsiness on purpose to gain sympathy or attention). She frequently offers to allow others to beat, strip or do other bad things to her so that they won’t hate her, as she believes it’s better to be treated badly than ignored. She thinks that people who don’t bully her don’t care about her existence at all and she is sometimes confused when others are kind to her. Despite this, she can become very attached to those who treat her kindly, such as Hajime Hinata and her beloved, developing a love like and pathological relationship with the latter.

During Chapter 3, Mikan recovers her memories, causing her to turn back into an Ultimate Despair, with a drastic personality shift. She becomes angry, manipulative and dangerous. She is bitter and clearly aware of her maltreatment, blaming other people for her change in personality and transition to Despair. Unlike before, she calls the others out on it — even those who defended her, angrily asking why everyone always hates and bullies her. During the trial, she turns increasingly unstable and repeatedly asks to be forgiven in a way that resembles a mantra, but also sinisterly denies her charges and angrily pulls her hair. She claims that her motive for murder was simply love and she doesn’t care about anyone or anything but her beloved one, as she believes that her beloved one is the only one who loves and accepts her.

Mikan adapts quickly to her environment through altering aspects of her personality to suit what she had projected as their thoughts. However, before the memory recovery, Mikan was primarily self-effacing for the benefit of others and to reduce conflict; after the disease, she is cunning and deceptive in order to preserve herself, even at the cost of the others’ lives.

Mikan’s violent and sadistic side is present in her non-despair state, as well, though it is much more hidden. During the second trial, she mentions that she finds a quick desire to kill quite understandable. In Island Mode, she mentions that she enjoys horror movies because of all the blood and helpless people. During Chapter 2, she has a short angry outburst out of nowhere, and she claims that she says «weird things» when she’s nervous. She has a disturbing liking for syringes and shots, and repeatedly offers them to Hajime when she gains access to the Pharmacy, and even chases him around with a syringe in one of her Free-Time Events. She is also mentioned to creepily stare at Hajime and he sometimes had a feeling that she is forever watching him from somewhere.

Mikan became a nurse so she could have power and control over sick and injured people. In her Island Mode ending, she openly contemplates rendering Hajime an invalid so he can stay with her forever. However, he convinces her that he’ll stay regardless, so she doesn’t need to do that..

After awakening from her coma, Mikan reverts to her original personality, and Junko’s brainwashing was undone. She is shown to feel guilty for her actions as an Ultimate Despair, and decides to atone along with her other classmates.

Fanon

Owamiki is one of several ships that sailed as a result of the interactions between characters in Danganronpa V3’s bonus mode, Ultimate Talent Development Plan. It gained its popularity because of the two’s «Nice Girl, Bad Boy» status, as well as due to their personalities being considered matching, with Mondo’s talent causing him to get injured often and Mikan treating his injuries, and with Mondo showing the nice side of his personality (i.e. his code to never hit a girl) around her.

Nonetheless, because they only interact with each other in a bonus mode, only a small part of the fanbase is aware of the ship. Additionally, both characters have their much more popular ships from the canon. In spite of this, the ship has a fair number of fan fictions dedicated to it.
