The Kaiju Ghost Guide
Luigi doesn’t actually fight the ghost boss of the Paranormal Productions fight. Instead, he has to help him film a movie scene involving a ghost in a monster costume.
The Kaiju Ghost will fire a ball of atomic energy at Luigi, which can be pushed back with the Poltergust in order to deal damage. This will cause the Kaiju Ghost to start burning with blue energy and it will begin firing small balls of fire that need to be dodged. The next time it fires a ball of atomic energy, it will push back against the Poltergust. The only way to harm it during this test of strength is to summon Gooigi and have him use his Poltergust at the same time, which will create enough pressure to fire the ball into the ghost. This process needs to be repeated one more time and will end with a QTE involving both Gooigi and Luigi as they slam the Kaiju Ghost into the ground.
DLC Packs
Luigi’s Mansion 3 also has 2 DLC packs available for purchase, costing 10$ for both. Upon purchase, they unlock 3 unique ScreamPark modes and 3 Luigi Skins. The Luigi skins are purely cosmetic and based on one of floors in the story mode. and have no real affect on gameplay, however in ScareScraper they have a chance to turn a floor into the same theme as the skin the player is wearing. This will also summon floor-themed Goobs and Slammers which are never seen anywhere else. Buying the DLC bundle will also give you a Polterpup Flashlight.

- DodgeBrawl
- Desperate Measures
- Mummigi

History
Professor E. Gadd’s Research Journal
Gooigi was made by E. Gadd during the events of Professor E. Gadd’s Research Journal after seeing that the Goo was an intelligent entity and was capable of the mimic of actions. This gives him the idea of using the Goo to catch ghosts for him. E. Gadd went to work to give Goo a humanoid form to be capable of such task.
He failed to give it this form until the professor remembered the biological data that the Pixelator captured when Luigi used it in the past. Taking that data and converting it into an electrical signal, he was able to then input it into the Goo, making it take the exact shape of Luigi and creating Gooigi.
E. Gadd successfully taught Gooigi how to catch ghosts thanks to various recordings of Luigi in his adventures, but E. Gadd also wanted to improve Gooigi’s Goo-based properties to give him capabilities beyond those of a normal person. He then decided that he would need ghost energy from beyond Evershade Valley, sending him to the past to the first mansion, which will lead to the events of Luigi’s Mansion (3DS). Sending Gooigi elsewhere could both make him learn more from fighting ghosts and he could also collect ghosts for him.
After his return and with the new energy collected, E. Gadd began to expirement these on Gooigi’s material. He finally created a composition of Goo for Gooigi with a malleable texture that will give him the ability to slip between bars or pass through narrow pipes.
During the rest of his research, E. Gadd studied all of Gooigi’s characteristics, abilities, and weaknesses with various tests. He also searched a way for him to control Gooigi, which will lead to the creation of the Poltergust G-00.
Luigi’s Mansion (3DS)
Gooigi was sent back in time to the events of Luigi’s Mansion in Luigi’s Mansion (3DS) to assist Luigi on his quest and collect ghost energy. If the player manages to play with a another person who has a copy of the game, or with Download Play, they can play with Gooigi as the second player. If not, Gooigi will stay in the Lab, curiously staring at test tubes.
When the player finishes the game, the future version of Professor Elvin Gadd will check if Gooigi is being used or not. If not, the professor will look sad but he will say that you can use him in the future.
Luigi’s Mansion 3
After the successful tests, in Luigi’s Mansion 3 Gooigi is back at it again, brought by E. Gadd to the hotel with him and the new Poltergust G-00.
He now can be controlled by Luigi, he is stored in a container and can be used when pressing down the right stick. While that is happening, Luigi will be seen standing in place and sleeping unless in multiplayer mode. Gooigi can also help Luigi reach to objects that he can’t reach like normal.
Trivia
- Luigi’s new Poltergust was teased in a trailer for the inclusion of Simon Belmont in Super Smash Bros. Ultimate, almost a month before Luigi’s Mansion 3 was made known to the public. It’s name is Poltegust G-00 and there are many improvements to the original models, being able to throw plungers and a jet propulsion which makes Luigi jump.
- This is the fourth Mario game to star only Luigi, with the first being Mario is Missing!
- This is the first Luigi’s Mansion game to feature a Black Hole. In this case, it is a giant painting that is devouring the hotel that serves as the game’s focus.
- This is also the first Luigi’s Mansion game where Princess Peach physically appears. She was absent in the first two games, but she was mentioned by Toad in the first game.

Trivia
- Some of the Boos return from previous entries: GumBoo, Booigi, Boogie and Kung Boo are from Luigi’s Mansion, while Boolldog is from the 3DS remake and Luigi’s Mansion: Dark Moon.
- ComBooster, Boofuddler and Booccaneer are the only Boos that have a different dialogue intro in the part where they reveal their names when found or not found.
- The names «Boosician» and «Boogie» might have been swapped accidentally, as their personalities and floors where they reside make more sense with the other’s name despite both being related to music.
- If the Poltergust G-00 suddenly starts to vibrate when close to a Boo, it will send a Morse code vibration on the Nintendo Switch controllers: (-… — —), which translates as «BOO».
- If Luigi picks up a phone on one of the floors with a hidden Boo, on the other end of the line a Boo laugh would be heard. This will continue to happen until the Boo from that floor has been caught.
- If Luigi takes too long to find the first Boo, E. Gadd will finally recommend using the Dark-Light Device, also commenting that Boos like to play hide and seek.
-
The Dance Hall and The Spectral Catch
Interacting with an object in the room but in the other area where the Boo isn’t at the moment will not count as an error for the player. The music and Poltergust reactions will work the same either way in all the room.
are the only floors that will make the Boos appear in two different areas of the same room, possibly due to the small number of rooms on these floors.
- The mist will appear or not depending on the room where the Boo is fought.
- In 1F — Grand Lobby, mist won’t appear once the Boo is found, which will make the search more difficult as the room is so big. It’s possible that this was done to make it more harder on purpose, considering that GumBoo only has one room to hide unlike in the other floors.
- In the Dance Floor of the 14F — The Dance Hall, mist won’t appear, since the room itself already contains mist, even if it is in less quantity that the one created by the Boos.
- In the Waterworks of the B2 — Boilerworks, the Boo will make bats appear to attack Luigi when failing like the others, but being in the lower room, they will not be able to reach him.
- In the 9F — Unnatural History Museum, after catching the Boo, entering the elevator will produce a bug that will cause all the paintings in the Elevator Hall to be uncovered and those in the Exhibit Hall to disappear completely.

Description |
Luigi |
The main protagonist of the series, the cowardly Luigi, must fight his fears in order to rescue his brother and defeat King Boo, with the help of the different Poltergust models: the Poltergust 3000 in the first game and its remake, the Poltergust 5000 in the second game and spin-off, and the Poltergust G-00 in the third game. In the first game, Luigi’s cowardice is greatly exaggerated, but as the series progresses, he becomes somewhat braver and less afraid of ghosts. Additionally, the first game gives Luigi extensive dialogue, an aspect that is absent in later games. |
Professor Elvin Gadd |
Professor Elvin Gadd, or E. Gadd for short, is an elderly ghost researcher who invented the Poltergust series, among many other things, such as the Game Boy Horror, Dual Scream, Virtual Boo, Parascope, and Pixelator, all of which have helped Luigi throughout his adventures. E. Gadd also gives advice to Luigi. |
Mario |
Instead of being the main protagonist like in the Super Mario series, in the Luigi’s Mansion series, Mario is the one in need of saving just like Princess Peach in the Super Mario series, as King Boo traps him within a painting. In Luigi’s Mansion, Mario is somewhat impatient with Luigi and wants to be saved quickly, but in Luigi’s Mansion: Dark Moon, he thanks him for his efforts. |
Polterpup |
A specific Polterpup who repeatedly makes trouble for Luigi in the second game. After the Dark Moon is restored, he returns to being well-behaved, and becomes Luigi’s dog. He later reappears in the third game to help Luigi in his adventure; giving him tutorials and helping him capture ghosts by pulling Luigi back to make him able to drain the ghosts’ health faster. |
Gooigi |
Gooigi is a clone of Luigi who appears in the Nintendo 3DS remake of Luigi’s Mansion and Luigi’s Mansion 3. He appears in Luigi’s image, but is entirely composed of green goo, hence his name, and wields a gooey version of the Poltergust 3000 and Poltergust G-00. He also has a letter «G» on his hat instead of an «L». He was created by the future Professor E. Gadd from Luigi’s Mansion: Dark Moon. He is edible, and may taste like coffee. |
Major Antagonists
Character |
---|
Description |
King Boo |
The leader of the Boos, King Boo is the main antagonist of the series. In the first game, he releases several of E. Gadd’s captured Portrait Ghosts and tricks Mario and Luigi into thinking Luigi won a mansion in a contest. In the second, he destroys the Dark Moon to cause the friendly ghosts in Evershade Valley to turn hostile. In the third, he is released from his painting by Hellen Gravely and takes on a much more serious tone compared to the last two games. |
Boolossus |
A Big Boo composed of several smaller Boos, Boolossus appears as the third boss in the first game. Prior to the game’s events, Boolossus had been captured by Professor E. Gadd, although King Boo attacked his lab and freed Boolossus, along with the rest of the portrait ghosts. Boolossus also appears in the ScareScraper in the third game. |
Vincent Van Gore |
A ghost artist who is responsible for all the minor ghosts Luigi must capture in the first game, as well as the one who guards the key to the Secret Altar. |
Hellen Gravely |
A big fan of King Boo’s and the owner of the Last Resort Hotel, she acts as an antagonist of Luigi’s Mansion 3, where she captures Mario and several of his friends in paintings in order to impress King Boo. |
King MacFrights Guide
King MacFrights will mount a horse and charge around the arena during the battle. When he lifts his lance and it starts to glow, the arrow slits will start to fire arrows into the arena. The arrows will sometimes drop healing hearts when they hit the opposite wall.
Wait for King MacFrights to charge Luigi directly and hit him with a charged-up Strobulb shot, leaving him vulnerable to a plunger shot, which can be grabbed with the Poltergust and used to slam him into the ground. The King’s armor will break and he will come at Luigi in his ghost form with his shield. He will eventually grow dizzy from the chase and will be open to a hit from the Strobulb and a Poltergust slam attack.

The Dancers & DJ Phantasmagloria Guide
The first phase of this battle involves Luigi battling ghosts in a haunted disco. Luigi has to face off against a group of hooded ghosts on the dancefloor, one of whom has the elevator button that he needs to continue. The ghost holding the key can be revealed with the Strobulb (just look for the flash) and then hit it with a Stomp. The intention is to try and capture the ghost holding the key each time, which will prompt the DJ to enter the battlefield.
DJ Phantasmagloria will perform a spin attack with two flaming vinyl records in her hands. She can be knocked back three times with a Stomp attack and when she reappears, hit her with the Strobulb to cause her to hide within her afro. Once she starts hiding, the afro can be knocked off with a Stomp, leaving her vulnerable to the Strobulb and a slam attack from the Poltergust. DJ Phantasmagloria will start rolling flaming vinyl records across the stage in later phases of the battle, but the same process can be repeated to defeat her.

Capture
Once the ghost is found interacting with the furniture where they are hidden, the fight against them will begin. All the exits will be closed, and some rooms will then be covered with a mist that will help the player follow the movements of the Boo, even though the enemy has become invisible, leaving a track in the mist where they go.
Luigi will not only have to find and catch them, but he must also be prepared for their attacks. The Boos not only know how to make themselves invisible, but they will also attack Luigi if he takes too long to find them, using a direct spin attack in the direction where Luigi is or even dropping and throwing bombs.
The player then will have to reveal them using their Dark-Light Device, similar to Luigi’s Mansion: Dark Moon. Once this is done, the Boos will reveal their tongues, is in this moment that Luigi will be able to trap them with his Poltergust G-00 and slam them on the floor, reducing 1 HP with every kick given, dropping Money in the process, mostly Coins and Gold Bars. They will also become visible while attacking our hero, Luigi can use this to his advantage.
Unlike previous entries, all normal Boos in Luigi’s Mansion 3 have the same amount of HP, remaining fixed at 20 HP for all floors. Additionally, the precise location of Boos is randomized in differents rooms and hidding places.

Personality
“OH NOOOOOO!”
—Mario, crying over Peach’s condition.
Unlike his friends, Mario is completely flat when it comes to personality, not undergoing any character development in any of the games he appears in. Nintendo stated that Mario’s personality is kept simple so he can be reusable in other settings. Despite this, in Luigi’s Mansion 3 he shows more personality and reactions about what happens to him and those he loves on the hotel, especially towards Luigi and Peach.
Unlike Luigi, who is a massive coward, Mario is courageous, headstrong, and incredibly reckless. It is stated in Luigi’s Mansion that he put up a fight against the Boos despite being drastically outnumbered.
According to Luigi, Mario always puts his cap in a washing machine instead of hand-washing it, showing him as (in Luigi’s words) «careless». In the first game, he screams and cries for help, yelling «what’s the holdup?!» at Luigi in a frustrated tone, showing him as incredibly impatient and easily angered.
His recklessness is best shown in the third game, where despite Luigi’s warnings, he immediately rushes to the roof after his rescue to save Peach from being turned into a portrait, despite King Boo being there, repeatedly panicking and crying over Peach’s condition and begging Luigi to help.
He appears to have a fixation on food, as shown at the beginning of the third game, where he immediately went to a table filled with food to eat a slice of cake, only for Polterpup to eat it. This is further shown in his room at the RIP Suites, which is littered with pizza boxes.
