Gameplay

Dragon’s Dogma allows the player to create their own character, whose gender and appearance can be altered to the player’s liking. The player can select one of three classes (called Vocations) for their character.

  • Fighter — A class focused on attacking. Uses swords and shields for blocking enemy attacks.
  • Mage — A class focused on magic. Uses staves.
  • Strider — A class focused on speed. Uses daggers for close combat and bows for ranged attacks

Players will be given three AI controlled teammates called Pawns, who can be issued commands, such as «Go«, «Help«, and «Come«. These characters will assist the player by giving information about enemies, among other things.

Dragon’s Dogma offers a new feature to the action game genre: allowing the player to grab onto enemies to allow for a more varied means of attacking. For example, the player can grab onto the legs of a Griffin and then climb up it to attack its head for more damage.

A huge open world set in the land of Gransys full of monsters will be available for the player to explore and quest within, as well as a large city environment, in which over 200 NPCs who will freely go about their day-to-day lives. These NPCs can be talked to with full voice acting.

Players will supposedly be able to look forward to between 30 and 100 hours, the former being for players who play normally, and the latter for players who wish to play the game to its fullest.

Creature spell

This spell is used against the Arisen and allies in Gransys during encounters with Gorechimeras, Wyrms, and Liches. In Bitterblack Isle, Maneaters, Frostwyrms and the Dark Bishop frequently employ this attack.

When cast by a creature, the spell’s properties are subtly different.  A sigil appears on the floor, with its rotation indicating the progression of the spell. When the spell completes, any caught within the sigil will be killed regardless of the time spent within the sigil, thus the sigil is only truly dangerous at the moment the spell completes.

Whilst the Arisen and human allies will be killed, Pawns are only rendered unconscious and can be easily revived.

Notes

  • Certain attacks and skills (for example Compass Slash) grant temporary invulnerability when in use, and allow the user to be within the sigil when it completes due to invincibility frames.
  • The augment Tenacity works against exequy and can occasionally leave you with 1hp instead of 0 after the spell is complete.
  • It is possible to escape the effect of the spell whilst within the sigil by Perfect Blocking, though the timing may be difficult. It is likely that the Arisen needs to face the center of the spell when blocking.
    • Normal blocks do not work.
    • Pawns will rarely attempt to perfect block the spell.

Notes

  • Stance effects (such as Grappled or Knockdowned) doesn’t seem to affect debilitation resistance, nor does striking weakspots appear to make a difference.
  • The cumulative effect of debilitating attacks appears to work in the same way that foes are Staggered or Knockdowned

    Unlike knockdown an attack does not need to do damage to cause debilitation — even resisted attacks that do zero harm can debilitate.

  • The accumulation also appears to die off over time, so more hits may be required if long pauses are left between strikes.
  • In the case of the four Strength and Magick power and defense debilitations (Lowered Strength, Lowered Defense, Lowered Magick Defense, and Lowered Magick) the effects stack for each up to four times.
    • The number of applications of each effect is not shown, only whether or not it is present.
    • The stacking is cumulative with the corresponding Invigorations — in that, for example — 1 instance of Lowered Strength obtained after three instances of strength boosted (ie 3x Conqueror’s Periapt) will reduce the boost to a lower level.
    • The debilitation and invigorations do not directly cancel one another.
    • If more applications of the corresponding debilitation/invigoration have been received than the associated invigoration/debilitation then the status effect with the most applications will show in status menus and icons. If both are equal the debilitation will show.
    • The net effect of four negative and four corresponding positive debilitations and invigorations seems to be negative overall — better to clear the debilitations than try to override..
  • Pawns will attack creatures that they would otherwise ignore if they are first debilitated.
  • The infliction of Petrification clears all other debilitations, but not Invigorations.
  • There are also three weapons that uniquely cause Lowered Strength (Dragon’s Roost), Lowered Defense (Sapfire Daggers), and Lowered Magick (Magebreaker)
  • In addition to the natural side effects of all fire, ice, and lightning spells, plus holy and dark based enchants, a few spells can cause debilitations as side effects.  These include Miasma (poison), Magick Rebuffer (lowered magick defense), and Magick Rebalancer (lowered magick defense plus lowered magick).
  • Unarmed attacks are unable to inflict weapon based debilitations; such attacks include the shockwave from Sorcerer’s Magick Billow, and Warrior’s Pommel Bash

    Elemental-based spells unique to Magick Archer do not transfer debilitations from a Rusted Spellbow or special dagger, with the exception of the spellbow core skills Seeker and True Seeker.

  • Debilitation resistance does not prevent illness caused by consuming items (such as Rotten Beast-Steak) even at 100% resistance.
  • The low debilitating power of permanently enchanted elemental daggers (like Heaven’s Key or Galvanic Razors) makes them unable debilitate Spiders with a single hit — usually these creatures are instantly affected with any elemental attack.

Description

Maul is the leader of the south-western bandits called the Iron Hammer Bandits and is located in The Ruins of Aernst Castle. He is initially non-hostile, but attacking him will cause him to attack the Arisen in turn, and also make all other bandits in the castle hostile.

Maul values a strong will above all else, and is interested in the Arisen’s actions. Despite being a gruff bandit leader, Maul seems to have a soft spot for children, and can show compassion, as witnessed by his actions towards Pike.

Equipment

Maul wears parts of various Barbarian Armor Sets to show he’s an intimidating leader. He wields the weapons of a Ranger but wears the equipment befitting a Warrior.

He may gift a Maul’s Badge of Amity if a bond is made with him, but one cannot be obtained by defeating him — instead killing him will get the Arisen a Giant Coin Pouch.

Maul has the same elemental weaknesses as a bandit of the assassin class, but with the high health of warrior — his physical defense however is relatively low. He is a ranger, and in combat Maul is likely to use Gamble Draw.

Dragon’s Dogma: Dark Arisen is the re-release of the original game containing massive new content. The game was revealed at the 2012 Tokyo Game Show. This release contains the full original Dragon’s Dogma game, with all original Downloadable Content (bonus quests and cosmetic items pre-loaded; armor and weapons available to buy from merchants), plus new additions such as new enemies, quests, locations, character customization, weapons and armors.

Tactics

Offensive

 Immune to Blindness.

Sopor vs Elder Ogre

A Mystic Knight demonstrating Sopor effectiveness. Elder Ogres are easily slain while asleep. Using a Rusted Staff can double debilitate them with Torpor and Sleep.

  • Strong against Fire and Holy enchanted weapons and spells.
  • Weak against Lightning and Dark enchanted weapons and spells.
  • Vulnerable to Torpor, Poison, Tarred, and Lowered Strength such as inflicted by the Dragon’s Roost shield.
  • Can be put to Sleep..
  • The head is a weak point and should be targeted by climbing, ranged attacks and/or spells.
  • Equipping items and augments such as Barbed Nails or Emphasis will increase the chances of knockdown.
  • Elder Ogres possess a high tolerance for physical damage, so make sure the party has enchanted weapons or enchantment spells.

Defensive

  • If climbing the monster and it reaches up to grab the Arisen, Instant Reset can be used as an emergency dismount to avoid being grabbed and eaten.
  • Inflicting it with Torpor reduces the creatures potential, more so when it chooses to rampage.
  • Elder Ogres can squeeze through doorways (sometimes straight through solid walls) that are 1/3 of their size, even in areas the Arisen may think are safe and out of the monster’s reach.
  • The Elder Ogre may snatch up a party member and run off to attempt to eat them, like the normal Ogre, but if it bites into a female pawn or Arisen it will stagger and fall down, clutching its throat as if poisoned. This allows the party to inflict more damage while it is staggered, though the bite can slightly heal the Elder Ogre.
  • As Elder Ogres prefer to attack males, a male Arisen can lure the Elder Ogre away from spellcasters or even off ledges, such as the bridge in the Fortress of Remembrance.

Class specific

  • Assassin’s : Masterful Kill can intimidate an Elder Ogre into hiding behind their guard, doing nothing. By simply standing still and repeatedly engaging Masterful Kill, the Arisen can grant abundant spellcasting time to pawns.
  • Magick Archers : Ricochet Hunter is very effective, as it plays to both the enclosed spaces usually found in Bitterblack Isle, as well as the Ogre’s elemental weakness, and has the additional advantage of eventually stunning the creature, making it more vulnerable. Great Sacrifice might also be considered..
  • Mystic Knights : Ruinous Sigil imbued with lightning can knock down or stun Elder Ogres -further a lightning sigil planted by the Ogre’s head when they’ve fallen down does massive damage.
  • Sorcerers : A wide variety of spells area effective including High Necromancy, High Fulmination, and High Maelstrom.

11 Perfect Blocks. 3 from Elder Ogres and 8 from Eliminators. AllL Elder Ogre attacks can be Perfect Blocked except for their deceptive grab attack, which can be easily confused for an arm swing. Here, the Arisen makes use of Abyssal Anguish, Flame Riposte, and Full Moon Slash to overwhelm the enemy.

Overview

The Dragonforged is found in a cave under a set of standing stones at Hillfigure Knoll, in the Northface Forest. He is accompanied at all times, and only by his faithful pawn The Fool, who has come to closely resemble him. Supposedly a man who faced a dragon long ago, he is the only man who knows how to read Dragonspeak.

The Dragonforged is an Arisen from long ago — he created the warrior drawing on Hillfigure Knoll to draw Arisen to him, and seeks to guide any Arisen who come to him. A headless spear and shield can be seen in his cave, and on the knoll itself can be found the Signs of Valor, former spearheads used as daggers — it seems that all these were once the Dragonforged’s weapons, and the drawing on the hill likely depicts himself.

An Arisen also, his arms are burnt black — likely the reason for his namesake of «Dragonforged» is that his hands and legs underwent the process.

There are very few who know of the existence of this man and none knows the truth of his identity. There is only one thing that they know for sure about this puzzling individual: he knows more than anyone else living about dragons.His name and his ties are unknown. Equally mysterious is how he came to possess his considerable familiarity with dragons. However he came about it, the breadth of his knowledge is undeniable. He knows things that no person on the earth should know.No one else can say if the things which he says are true. Some consider him to be nothing but a fabricator of myths and lies. Still he does seem to know something about dragons and so—since his connection with the terrible beasts was the only fact that anyone alive knew about him—he came to be known only as the Dragonforged.

Combat

As the ageless Duke, Edmun is a formidable fighter. He has access to the Dragon’s Maw attack and will use it. It is possible to slay Edmun either with a Maker’s Finger or via Poisoning, though he is immune to a Maker’s Finger if seated in his throne. He can be put to sleep, and blinded, but is immune to petrification. He is practically impervious to attacks, and can also arrest the Arisen.

On death an Inclination Elixir may be obtained.

As the aged Duke, he is much weaker, slowed and vulnerable to all debilitations (Blind, Tarred, Torpor, Poison, Lowered Strength), though even while blinded, the Duke can somehow still locate and strike the Arisen.

Trivia

  • The Wight’s voice in-game is treated as a Sound Effect.
  • When casting Unholy Anodyne, the Wight speaks a phrase in an unknown language.
  • The Wight in the Chamber of Anxiety speaks in English and an unknown language when casting spells and also has the most health of any Wight in game with 3 full bars of health and slightly higher defenses, albeit it is still weaker than a standard Lich.
  • Wights will often laugh if the Arisen or his/her Pawns are hit by its attacks, most commonly if hit by Levin.
  • During the Main quest Deny Salvation, the Arisen will see two Salvation magick users being turned into Wights, which gives an insight of what is required to become one. They are stabbed with a mysterious dagger and dragged to an eldritch abyss-like vortex from which they then emerge as Wights.
  • Wights sometimes state that they are in pain and wish to be destroyed by adventurers, which is ironic as they cast deadly magicks against the party.
  • Summoned creatures may sometimes try to attack their master. Additionally the minions summoned by the Barta Crags Wight may be affected by the Maelstrom it casts.

Description

A more common type of dragon known as a Drake

The Red Drake is one of the smaller cousins of the titular Dragon in Dragon’s Dogma.

It is likely that the Drake in Devilfire Grove will be the first dragon encountered by the Arisen in the world of Gransys. After the cataclysmic events following The Final Battle, more dragons appear in Gransys, including other species.

Drakes are similar to their cousins the Wyrm and the Wyvern in that they bear some of the same abilities and characteristics. However, they are differentiated from their cousins by their relation to the Fire element. Accordingly, Drakes bear a natural weakness to Ice based attacks.

Defeating a Drake has a small chance of dragon forging the Arisen’s equipment, provided it has at least one level of enhancement.

New Game Plus

In New Game Plus, a new Seneschal is encountered:

  • If online, the game will choose a random online player and their Main Pawn. Vocations and abilities will be reflected on the player’s Seneschal depending what the online player had equipped at the time when they last defeated their Seneschal.
  • If offline, the Seneschal and pawn will have the same Equipment, Skills, and Vocation as the player’s Arisen and Main Pawn at the moment they killed the previous Seneschal. 
  • The Seneschal encountered in New Game Plus has the same stats as listed above. However, the Seneschals pawn does not have fixed stats and may be a very powerful foe. (verify)
  • While the Seneschal is a different character in New Game Plus both online or offline, the skills equipped to each vocation remain the same.

Sorcerer spell

«Invokes a magickal aura capable of destroying outright any foe held within its span for a set length of time.»

Upgrades to High Exequy. High Exequy has similar properties to Exquy, but greater range of effect, and acts faster.

This version of Exequy cast by Sorcerers can be used to target single or multiple enemies in a single cast.  Any non-humanlike foe that moves into the spell’s area of effect will have a circular countdown sigil appear on the target indicating the progress of the spell.  Once the circle is completed, the spell has been successfully cast; multiple targets can be made in the course of a single use of the spell. When the spell is released, any foes on which the spell sigil completed a rotation will be destroyed or killed.

The progress of the spell sigil rotation is broadly related to the strength and resistances of the foe.  A small rat’s sigil completes almost instantly, whilst a Golem’s takes minutes to terminate. Exequy can destroy almost any enemy, including usually magick-resistant ones such as Golems; however it is completely ineffective against any human foe.

In the case of hybrids and monstrosities such as Chimera and Evil Eyes the spell will target each ‘head’ separately, and just as it can destroy a usually magick-resistant Golem, Exequy can target an Evil Eye even when its impermeable shield is up.

Casting Exequy drains Stamina continuously until release.

Time

The time taken for the spell to complete generally increases with creature’s size and dangerousness — however it seems each species and subspecies has its own resistance that is not directly related to any stat.

  • High Exequy is around one-third quicker than Exequy.
  • Generally quickly effective against non-human living creatures, but much slower against all undead, including skeleton.
  • The core Magick of the caster does not affect cast time.
  • The power of the staff used to cast the spell has no effect on cast time.
  • Periapts do not affect either stamina consumption or casting time.
  • An enemy’s remaining health does not affect the time required.

The sigil on a foe that has escaped the spell’s area of effect will slowly diminish.

Resistance and immunity

All humans and pawns are immune to Exequy and High Exequy — this includes hostile foes like Bandits or angry Soldiers, as well as Wandering Pawns, Corrupted Pawns, those in the Chamber of Lament, and other pawns that have become Possessed. The sigil of Exequy will fail to target these people.

The Ur-Dragon is also immune.

However Exequy is effective against some usually magick resistant creatures:

  • Golems can be destroyed
  • The discs of a Metal Golem

    In some cases casting will stall when attempted on the Golem itself. This may be a bug limited to the Metal Golem encountered during Mettle Against Metal in the Witchwood(verify).

    can be targetted and destroyed relatively quickly, or the Metal Golem itself can be targeted.

  • Exequy can bypass the magickal barrier of Vile Eyes and Evil Eyes.

The spell is relatively slow against all types of undead creatures, including skeletons.

Notes

Residual sigil glitch from targeting many foes

  • Effective against mobs of weak but very mobile enemies or as a sneak attack from afar.
  • This spell has the longest range of all Sorcerer spells — the sigil can travel at least 2m further out that other spells like Levin or Comestion.
    • The range of effect from the spell sigil is spherical.
    • This spell has also the fastest moving sigil of all spells.
  • Also targets hidden creatures, such as Garden birds or Leapworms and aerial enemies if are flying low enough.
  • The spell possess no lock-on and must be aimed manually.
    • The spell button must be held down until the circle completes or the spell will cancel.
    • Pressing manual aiming button will reset the position of targeting sigil.
    • Unfinished circles may be completed as long as no discharge happened or the spell was cancelled.
    • When the circle is complete the discharge may be triggered. The discharge will happen with minor delay.
    • Once triggered the discharge cannot be interrupted by enemies’ attacks.
  • The Arisen can use stamina curatives as long as the player continuously holds the spell button. This tactic allows a player to kill large enemies otherwise impossible due to the skill’s large stamina consumption. The spell button can be released whilst in the inventory, but must be held when returning from inventory.
  • (Glitch) Targeting many foes (over ten) may result in a residual sigil visual glitch. The exact conditions to reproduce this are not clear.

Вначале игры можно создать своего персонажа, если вы не играли раньше в Dragon`s Dogma. Но, лучше всего подгрузить своего «юнита», так как попасть на новую локацию можно лишь с 50-того уровня (можно и раньше, но вам не хватит характеристик, чтобы сразиться с противниками).
  • «Пешки». Игроку на помощь могут прийти второстепенные персонажи, так называемые «пешки». Они находятся по управлением AI- игры, но несмотря на это, умеют действовать в бою самостоятельно, прикрывая, подлечивая игрового персонажа. Кстати, в специальных местах можно «арендовать» пешек других игроков, которые могут прокачивать свои умения, и со временем «стать людьми»!
  • Разветвленная система прокачки. В игрушке много веток развития, и вообще, большую часть игрового времени вы будете проводить в интерактивном меню, настраивая умения своего персонажа, выбирая оружие, пешек, и прочий инвентарь под каждую из битв. Кстати, о битвах. Тут они по сложности похожи на Dark Souls.
