The three tenets

The Creed mainly emphasized three simple moral tenets that focused on ensuring a successful mission, mastery of emotions, and the safety of the Brotherhood.

Stay your blade from the flesh of an innocent

«I would not have drawn attention to us. I would not have taken the life of an innocent.»
―Malik Al-Sayf at Solomon’s Temple.-

The goal of the Assassins was to ensure peace in all things. The Assassins believed that political assassinations and the death of the corrupt would bring peace and a true sense of security to the common people. Slaying innocents and civilian bystanders who did not need to die could spread strife and discord, in addition to ruining the name of the Assassin Order itself. It also prevented them from achieving their higher purpose, as a precise killer instead of an indiscriminate butcher. This tenet was implemented by Bayek after Gamilat, the leader of the Nabatean rebels in the Sinai Peninsula, used the slaughter of innocents as martyrs to recruit more people to the cause.

Hide in plain sight

«Let the people mask you such that you become one with the crowd.»
―Al Mualim.-

Altaïr blending with a group of scholars

Be unseen. The Assassins’ aim was to get close to their target stealthily and escape just as quickly. In more ancient times, Assassins aimed to perform ostentatious, awe-inspiring assassinations, usually in public.

The greatest illusion from such an assassination was that the Assassin seemingly materialized from nowhere, killed a corrupt public figure, and vanished into the depths of the crowd or environment. If an Assassin was spotted while stalking their target, the supernatural effect would be diluted, and it became more difficult for the Assassin to reach his target.

Never compromise the Brotherhood

«Its meaning should be obvious. Your actions must never bring harm upon us—direct or indirect!»
―Al Mualim chastising Altaïr Ibn-La’Ahad, 1191-

The actions of one must never bring harm to all. If an Assassin failed in their duty, and was captured or chased, they must never commit any action or say anything that could be tied back to the Brotherhood, or bring harm to any member of it.

Penalty for disobedience

Middle Ages

«Your selfish act beneath Jerusalem placed us all in danger! Worse still, you brought the enemy to our home! Every man we lost today was lost because of you!»
―Al Mualim reprimanding Altaïr, 1191.-

Al Mualim forcefully reminding Altaïr of the Creed

On most occasions, the breaking of one or more of the tenets of the Creed led to the execution of the involved Assassin, though there have been exceptions. Before the restructuring of the Order, Levantine Assassins were known to take their own life if necessary rather than compromise the Brotherhood. [citation needed]

During the Siege of Masyaf in 1176, Ahmad Sofian was captured and interrogated by the Saracens about the identity of the Assassin who infiltrated the camp. Ahmad broke and gave the name of Umar Ibn-La’Ahad. This resulted in him breaking the third tenet of the Creed, as Umar was executed for this, and though he was spared Ahmad could not bear the shame and guilt and took his own life, but not before begging the young Altaïr for forgiveness. Umar himself also technically broke the first and third tenets as well by killing a Saracen nobleman, who was not his target and which resulted in the Saracens electing to continue the siege unless the killer surrendered himself, which would have resulted in many Assassin deaths. Umar elected to give himself up for execution to save his fellow Assassins.

In 1191, Altaïr broke all three tenets during an important mission at Solomon’s Temple. By murdering an innocent, an old man whom he thought could have alerted the guards, and revealing himself to Robert de Sablé, Altaïr inevitably led the Templars back to Masyaf, jeopardizing not only his own safety, but the livelihood of the entire Brotherhood in the resulting attack.

Upon his return to Masyaf, Altaïr was publicly chastised and «executed» via stabbing as punishment by his Master. However, the execution was only an illusion, as Al Mualim wished to grant him a second chance. Instead, Altaïr was merely stripped of all his weapons and equipment, and demoted to the lowest rank of novice, forced to re-earn his rank through the Hunt for the Nine.

Following his return from exile, Altaïr decided to eliminate those of Abbas Sofian’s followers who had compromised the Brotherhood by harming civilians, while leaving alive those that still lived by the Creed.

Renaissance

«Our tenets are clear. One of our brothers has decided to disobey them and must pay with his life.»
―An Assassin of Jerusalem.

In 1498, Perotto Calderon also broke the tenets of the Creed out of his love for the Templar Lucrezia Borgia and their newborn son. He broke his cover as a spy amongst the Borgia, compromising the Brotherhood in the process, and killed several of his fellow Assassins in an effort to steal the Shroud of Eden they protected, which he thought could cure his child’s deformities.

Though he was successful, a team of Assassins later tracked Perotto down, and executed him as punishment.

Around 1511, one of Ezio’s Ottoman apprentices broke the first tenet after mistaking a cleric for the Templar Cyril of Rhodes and rashly assassinating him. Instead of punishing him, Ezio ordered him to reflect on his mistake and gave him the chance to redeem himself when they confronted Cyril again. Ironically, Ezio himself broke the first tenet indirectly during his visit to Derinkuyu, when he ignited the Templars’ cache of gunpowder to destroy it, resulting in a firestorm that engulfed the underground city and killed many of its civilians.

During this time, an Assassin of Jerusalem broke the Creed, and the Ottoman Assassins were asked to intervene. Despite his treachery, the other Assassins of his guild asked that he be executed covertly with a crossbow.

French Revolution

In 1793, the French Assassin Council expelled Arno Dorian from the Brotherhood for repeatedly assassinating targets without consulting them. He was accused of compromising the Brotherhood and pursuing a personal vendetta. However the expulsion was temporary as the Council decided to reinstate the young Assassin years later, after he had matured and demonstrated true fidelity to the Creed.

The Maxim

«Our Creed does not command us to be free. It commands us to be wise.»
―Altaïr Ibn-La’Ahad.

The Initiation ceremony in Rome

«Nothing is true; everything is permitted» was the Creed’s maxim and primary guideline. The phrase was created during the 11th century by Hassan-i Sabbāh, the first recorded leader of the Assassin Order.

Al Mualim taught Altaïr that the maxim commanded the Assassins not to be free, but to be wise. Altaïr later explained that for a person to abide by the maxim, they had to transcend the illusion which was the world, and to «recognize that laws do not arise from divinity, but reason».

Ezio Auditore da Firenze once spoke of the maxim at length with Sofia Sartor, who found it rather cynical. However, he told her that the maxim was not a doctrine to be followed, but merely an observation of the world, explaining thusly:

This maxim was spoken by all Assassins present at every new Assassin’s induction into the Order, and in its original Arabic by Ezio as he presided over each ceremony when in Rome.

Arno Dorian, a member of the French Brotherhood, ruminated that the maxim merely served as a guide and a warning, rather than as a principle meant for an individual to follow, having witnessed directly how ideals led to dangerous extremism, elaborating that:

Development

The idea behind Assassin’s Creed: Revelations was initially conceived for a game in Nintendo’s newest portable console, the Nintendo 3DS, and was originally titled Assassin’s Creed: Lost Legacy. The original plot involved Ezio journeying to the fortress of Masyaf to uncover Altaïr’s secrets, which Revelations would later adopt. Lost Legacy was quietly canceled, and had been extensively reworked into Revelations.

Despite Jean-François Boivin releasing a statement that no Assassin’s Creed game would be released in 2011, Yves Guillemot hinted that there would be «something Assassin’s related» that year. True enough, a teaser regarding the game and its title was released on the Assassin’s Creed Facebook page, and flashed several hints regarding the story and setting, such as images of Constantinople and Masyaf, and information regarding the former protagonist Altaïr Ibn-La’Ahad. That same year on 5 May, GameInformer released details and screenshots about the game, such as showing images of an older Ezio Auditore and new weapons like that of the Hookblade. The game was then officially announced at the Electronic Entertainment Expo (E3) of 2011.

Beta

On 3 September 2011, PlayStation Plus members and PlayStation Uplay members were able to participate in a beta for Revelations‘ multiplayer, which ran until 17 September 2011. All PlayStation Network users were also able to access the beta on 8 September 2011, five days later. During this beta, nine characters, three maps, and four game modes could be accessed.

Trivia

  • Revelations was the first Assassin’s Creed game in which Ezio’s default outfit was not predominantly white. It was also the first game where his default outfit did not have a cape, although he did wear one before his arrival at Masyaf.
  • The lack of a missing ring finger on the Levantine Assassins previously seen in Assassin’s Creed was corrected in Revelations. However, this introduced a new inconsistency, as the Assassins would lack a ring finger even after Altaïr had introduced changes that made the ritual obsolete.
  • Altaïr’s voice was provided by Cas Anvar, who spoke with a Middle-Eastern accent authentic to Altaïr, unlike his Western accent heard in Assassin’s Creed provided by Philip Shahbaz. Altaïr’s Middle-Eastern accent was only previously heard in Assassin’s Creed: Bloodlines.
  • Despite the crossbow having been originally removed from Assassin’s Creed due to historical inaccuracies, it made an appearance in one of Altaïr’s memories, being used by Haras to execute several Assassins.
  • The identity of Juhani Otso Berg, participating in the second stage of the Animi Training Program, was left unmentioned until the release of Assassin’s Creed: Initiates, though it did detail his rise through the ranks of the Templar Order, becoming a Master Templar and a member of the Order’s Inner Sanctum.

Development

Ubisoft Quebec handled Syndicate’s lead development, in conjunction with eight other studios from Montreal, Singapore, Annecy, Montpellier, Chengdu, Shanghai, Kiev and Reflections. Teams from Ubisoft Sofia, Barcelona and Toronto were also involved in the game’s completion.

Having gained solid brand experience from their contributions to previous entries in the Assassin’s Creed franchise, Ubisoft Quebec reportedly worked on Syndicate for more than two years. They collaborated closely with Ubisoft Montreal, whose significant contributions to the game include producing London’s landmarks, creating «living and breathing» crowds and improving the parkour gameplay’s smoothness.

Ubisoft Singapore, who pioneered the naval gameplay seen in Assassin’s Creed III and subsequent entries, as well Assassin’s Creed: Unity‘s time anomalies, focused on new gameplay along the River Thames. Ubisoft Annecy was responsible for the development of the dynamic Train Hideout, a mobile headquarters for the Assassins around which several side missions centered on. These missions featured a strong narrative that enriched Syndicate’s «gang fantasy».

One of the game’s boroughs, Whitechapel, was developed by Ubisoft Montpellier, who also worked on side missions related to historical figures and specific sections within main missions. Ubisoft Reflections is a developer known for working on racing games, and was brought in to create the free roaming vehicle gameplay. Along with vehicle degradation and in-vehicle combat mechanics, Reflections also produced several side activities that involved racing with horse-drawn carriages.

Ubisoft Chengdu was responsible for a large variety of boats, environment assets and crowd animations, while Ubisoft Shanghai handled architecture and character assets. As with previous entries, Ubisoft Kiev worked on Syndicate’s PC version.

The game’s 3 hour long score was composed by Austin Wintory, intended to «evoke the prowess and sarcasm» of the game’s two heroes.

Information

Initially intended as an art book, the project gathered so much material that Ubiworkshop decided to expand it into an encyclopedia.

Artists like Craig Mullins, Tavis Coburn, 123Klan, Gabz, James NG, David Alvarez and many others were given free reign to draw an Assassin from the period and style of their choice, of which the artworks were included in the Encyclopedia. There was also a «cartes blanches» section that featured artwork by other professional artists and fans of the series.

A Black Edition was released with the Animus Edition of Assassin’s Creed: Revelations.

A White Edition was released through UbiWorkshop and with the Ultimate Edition of Assassin’s Creed: Revelations.

A Second Edition was released in October 2012 to coincide with the release of Assassin’s Creed III. The Second Edition features 120 new pages of content that include information on Assassin’s Creed III, Assassin’s Creed III: Liberation and Assassin’s Creed: The Chain along with new cartes blanches.

A Third Edition was released in October 2013 to coincide with the release of Assassin’s Creed IV: Black Flag. The Third Edition contains over 390 pages of content revised and updated with information from Assassin’s Creed IV: Black Flag and Assassin’s Creed: Brahman.

The Assassin’s Creed Encyclopedia is divided into four sections:

  1. Factions
  2. Story
  3. Characters
  4. Places

Production

Romano Orzari and the crew on set

Both the film producers and game developers worked very closely to link the two titles. Live actors were filmed on a green screen, which was then replaced by the game’s environment that was extracted from the Anvil game engine to Autodesk Softimage. Adding to this, half of the assets were re-worked on the texture and geometrical levels before being exported to be used in the film.

For the costumes, historians researched traditional dress and concept artists from Ubisoft made illustrations of each costume, which was then created by a costume maker from the film team. These costumes eventually influenced the 3D models in Assassin’s Creed II.

Corey May, the writer from Assassin’s Creed II worked closely with the Assassin’s Creed: Lineage scriptwriter, William Raymond, in order to make sure both stories were linked to the series’ universe.

Soundtrack

The score of the film was composed by George S. Clinton, unlike the Assassin’s Creed II soundtrack, which was scored by Jesper Kyd.

Description

Written by KARL KERSCHL & CAMERON STEWART Art and cover by KARL KERSCHL & CAMERON STEWART The monster-hit, historical fantasy/sci-fi Assassin’s Creed video game from Ubisoft breaks into comics with a stunning 3-issue series written and illustrated by acclaimed creators Karl Kerschl (WEDNESDAY COMICS, ADVENTURES OF SUPERMAN) and Cameron Stewart (BATMAN AND ROBIN)! ASSASSIN’S CREED: THE FALL follows 19th century Russian assassin Nikolai Orelov as he strives to claim an artifact of immense power from the hands of the Templars, leading to a climactic and violent showdown with the ruthless Tsar Alexander III aboard a speeding train! Meanwhile, in modern times, a troubled young drifter copes with unsettling visions of a possible past life — visions that have irreversible consequences for the present. ASSASSIN’S CREED: THE FALL is an exciting new chapter in the popular series that no fan will want to miss!

Gameplay

Assassin’s Creed: Identity primarily takes place in Florence and Rome during the Renaissance. New locations, and items, can be unlocked by playing through the game. The database returns, offering entries on historic monuments, characters and events.

The missions in Identity center around the Crows gang and the First Civilization. Missions are short and varied, generated from sixteen different mission types. Players can choose to hire friends and other players to help complete objectives.

Identity allows players to train, develop and equip two different Assassins. Players can choose from four classes: Berserker, Shadow Blade, Trickster and Thief. Each class has its own strengths and weaknesses. Assassins can be customized with unique outfits and color variations. Using the forging system, players can create new items and use it to customize their Assassin.

Identity supports tap-to-move, dual virtual stick controls and gamepads. Running on the Unity engine, the game features custom-made HD textures, shaders and models, as based on the Assassin’s Creed console games. It also includes a dynamic crowd system and lighting, as well as night, day and weather presets.

In order to effectively solve most enemies, the Kill Token can be gained by killing guards, which increases the meter by one bar; conversely, every injury in combat decreases the meter by one bar. Represented by a meter with three tiers. When the meter upon being completely filled, it grants Lo Sparviero the ability to execute the target.

Trivia

  • The Assassins are based on an Islamic sect known as the Order of the Hashshashin from which the term «assassin» originates, the idea for it coming from Blitzkrieg to Desert Storm: The Evolution of Operational Warfare by Robert M. Citino, along with Vladimir Bartol’s novel Alamut.
  • The siege of Masyaf borrows elements from Vladimir Bartol’s novel. In the novel, the leader of the Assassins orders two of his men to kill themselves as a demonstration of his power. The two men jump from a tower with smiles on their faces, much in the same way Altaïr performed a Leap of Faith from Masyaf Castle.
  • One of the key inspirations of Raphael Lacoste, the Art Director and Production Designer of Assassin’s Creed, was Orientalist paintings, particularly the lithographs of the Holy Land and Syria by David Roberts.
  • The game starts shortly after the siege of Acre and ends just before the battle of Arsuf, thus making the narration span from July to September 1191.
  • The popular phrase used to describe the Assassins’ maxim «Laa shay’a waqui’n moutlaq bale kouloun moumkine» is Arabic for «Nothing is true. Everything is permitted.» This quote is generally attributed to the founder of the Hashshashin, Hassan-i Sabbah.
  • Assassin’s Creed was later released in the Assassin’s Creed: Anthology Collector’s Edition box, consisting of the main games in the Assassin’s Creed series.
